Job description

Cyber Security Engineer

Location: Greater Manchester, England, United Kingdom

Company: Intrum

We are looking for a hands‑on Cyber Security Engineer – someone who lives and breathes security and is ready to protect, monitor, and strengthen our IT landscape. You will play a key role in safeguarding our AWS cloud environment, ensuring our systems remain secure, resilient, and fully compliant with financial regulations.

Responsibilities
  • Operate and optimise a wide range of security platforms, including SIEM, XDR, EDR, IAM, DLP, PAM, ZTNA, and vulnerability management tools.
  • Take ownership of the detection and response lifecycle – triage alerts, investigate incidents, identify root causes, and coordinate response actions.
  • Implement and manage security controls across AWS, Azure, and on‑prem environments, aligning with frameworks such as ISO 27001 and PCI‑DSS.
  • Build and maintain clear, actionable dashboards and reports for technical and leadership teams, covering threats, vulnerabilities, incident trends, and control effectiveness.
  • Ensure documentation is tight – runbooks, playbooks, SOPs, and other artefacts are kept up‑to‑date.
  • Support internal and external audits, providing evidence and reporting to demonstrate control effectiveness.
  • Drive the FCA principle of Consumer Duty by ensuring good customer outcomes in all security activities that may impact customers.
Qualifications
  • Total track record in cyber security operations with real hands‑on experience.
  • Strong familiarity with cloud platforms – especially AWS and Azure – and applying cloud security principles in live environments.
  • Experience within a UK Financial Services company is essential; knowledge of compliance standards (e.g., ISO 27001, PCI‑DSS) required.
  • Hands‑on expertise with Microsoft security tools, including Defender for Endpoint, Defender for Cloud, Defender for Identity, Microsoft Purview, Taegis, Z‑Scaler or equivalents.
  • Solid foundation in infrastructure – understanding how networks, servers, and systems operate to secure them effectively.
  • Solid knowledge of network architecture and protocols, including the OSI model, and application of layered security.
  • Experience with vulnerability management, security assessments, and working within ITSM/ITIL frameworks.
  • Proactive mindset – constantly seeking ways to improve, automate, and enhance security delivery.
  • Strong communication skills – confident translating technical risks into clear, actionable insights for diverse audiences.
Benefits
  • Lifestyle – competitive salary, 33 days holiday (including bank holidays) upon commencement, with buy‑back or sell‑back options; gadget schemes; contributory workplace pension; an extra day to celebrate your birthday.
  • Opportunities to grow – training, coaching, employee recognition programmes.
  • Health – private medical insurance, life assurance, and more.
  • Wellbeing – discounts on gym memberships, cycle‑to‑work schemes, 24/7 employee assistance programme, sociable working hours, breakfast snacks provided in the office.
  • Supportive, open, value‑driven culture – ethics, dedication, solutions, empathy. Inclusive and diverse workplace committed to empowering everyone.
