Job description

Job Description:

The Opportunity

Leonardo offers a range of Apprenticeships from 2-4 years across a variety of STEM and business routes, offering paid training, coupled with on-the-job learning that enables you to gain practical skills, experience, and knowledge that sets up the best start to your career. We offer competitive entry salaries and fully support your academic learning through to qualifications, with salary increases as you progress.

Whether leaving School or College with GCSEs/Standards, A ‘Levels/Highers (or equivalent), or in work and looking for a new career path, you are fully supported as you rotate within the business, working on real-time projects alongside highly skilled professionals who are passionate about their work. We support helping you settle into your new location, ensuring you are familiar with the team and have a warm welcome from day 1. There is a member of our Apprentice team at each site, helping you progress, ensuring your study time is protected, enabling access to digital learning as well as opportunities to get involved with the local community and STEM projects, enhancing many aspects of each programme.

The Role:

Looking for a great start to your career in technology, earning and learning on a professionally accredited, award-winning scheme? We are recruiting the cybersecurity experts of the future on our nationally recognised, award-winning Degree Apprenticeship Programme.

Involved in all phases of the Cyber Security lifecycle, you will be exposed to the latest tools, technologies, and processes, and have the opportunity to influence the future path of cyber security development within Leonardo. Developing real-time cyber solutions, creating sophisticated analysis and support tools, or contributing ideas to innovate the next generation of products - the challenges are varied.

Alongside this, you will also study with one of our partner universities towards the achievement of a BSc (Hons) or BEng (Hons) degree in an appropriate engineering discipline through a mixture of work-based learning, distance learning, and day release at university. On completion, you should have met the requirements for Incorporated Engineer as part of the way to gaining Chartered Engineer status.

During your apprenticeship, you will be required to share your time between the workplace and university. You will:

  1. Grow your knowledge of cyber engineering.
  2. Develop practical skills in development for complex systems, understanding key processes and technologies.
  3. Support early careers activities - our apprentices and graduates are expected to work as STEM ambassadors in schools, colleges, and universities.
  4. Commit to the successful completion of all your academic modules and assignments in support of the Apprenticeship standard.

What you will do:

Life at Leonardo is never boring! Throughout your apprenticeship, you will be working in a wide range of areas, such as:

  1. Building secure systems and networks from scratch.
  2. Installing and configuring operating systems, firewalls, and applications.
  3. Deploying and using secure Cloud environments such as AWS and Azure.
  4. Installing and using DevOps for secure software development.
  5. Data analytics with Machine Learning and AI.
  6. Detecting and remediating cyberattacks.

Your work will support critical business areas throughout Leonardo and our customers in the UK government and private sector and will provide you with great learning opportunities in the field. At the same time, you will obtain the academic knowledge and qualifications necessary for your future career in a high-tech company through your course at one of our partner universities.

You will be working within world-class facilities, in both office and lab environments, and will have opportunities to travel to other Leonardo UK and customer sites to meet with colleagues, customers, and suppliers.

Beyond the programme, there may be the opportunity for you to further your academic and vocational achievements based on your talents and capability and needs of the business. You would be expected to commit to the successful completion of all your academic modules and assignments in support of the Apprenticeship standard.

What we are looking for:

This Apprenticeship assumes little prior cybersecurity experience and is NOT suitable for candidates who already have an engineering, software, or computing degree.

Qualifications:

  1. 3 x A levels (Grade A-C) (or equivalent).
  2. Mandatory: Mathematics and either Physics or a Technology/Engineering subject.

AND another STEM subject.

Plus:

  1. 5 GCSE grades 9 - 4 or grades A*-C or equivalent,
  2. Mandatory: English Language, Maths, and a Science subject Plus 2 subjects.

We will also accept a BTEC Extended Diploma in Engineering instead of A levels but require attendance of the maths bridging course. We consider each application individually in consultation with our partnering university.

The starting salary for this role is £21,525.

Please note that in order to apply for this opportunity, you must be eligible for UK Security Clearance. Normally this is to the level of Security Check (typically known as “SC”) for our business, which includes having a minimum of 5 years permanent residency in the UK.

How will we support you?

Leonardo values people with a passion for technical analysis, judgement, and problem-solving. We reward commitment with a competitive remuneration and flexible benefits package including:

  1. Competitive starting salary.
  2. Annual incremental pay increases.
  3. 33 days holiday and flexible working arrangements.
  4. Pension scheme (Contributory).
  5. Cycle to Work initiative.
  6. Custom Working Model – supporting health and wellbeing and Inclusion and Diversity.

Leonardo is a leader in cybersecurity and one of the biggest suppliers of defence equipment to the UK MoD. Come and be a part of our community and work with some of the most talented engineers in the UK on some of the most exciting projects around.

We recruit on a rolling basis. These roles attract high competition, so do not delay - APPLY NOW to avoid disappointment.

At Leonardo, we are strongly committed to supporting all our people, and, as society and the environment we work in changes, our approach to Inclusion and Diversity continues to evolve and adapt to reflect this. A culture of inclusion goes on to create an environment for greater collaboration, innovation, and opportunities to develop as an organisation. If you are willing and able to commit to giving your best performance, you will find Leonardo a very rewarding place to work!
