Customs Compliance Manager

  • £50,000 - £60,000 per annum (dependent on skills & experience)

About the role:

This is a brand-new position for our business, providing you with the unique opportunity to build and shape our customs compliance framework from the ground up. Your role will be integral to the effective operation of our business, helping us navigate the complexities of international trade and ensuring we adhere to all relevant regulations and standards.

As our new Customs Compliance Manager, you will therefore be responsible for the following:

  1. Developing and implementing customs compliance strategies to ensure adherence to relevant regulations and standards, including customs laws, trade agreements, and sanctions.
  2. Staying up to date on changes to customs regulations and communicate implications to relevant stakeholders from both the UK and the European headquarters.
  3. Overseeing import and export activities, including documentation, classification, valuation, and tariff determination.
  4. Conducting internal audits to identify areas of non-compliance and develop corrective action plans.
  5. Serving as the primary point of contact for HMRC customs authorities and external auditors.
  6. Providing training and guidance to employees on customs compliance requirements and best practices.
  7. Developing and maintaining strong relationships with customs authorities, carriers, freight forwarders, and internal stakeholders from Logistics, Finance, Sales and Procurement departments.
  8. Monitoring and analyzing customs-related data to identify trends, issues, and areas for improvement.

What are we looking for?

  • Strong knowledge of customs regulations, international trade compliance, and logistics principles.
  • Proven experience in import/export operations management.
  • Previous experience and confidence with leading HMRC customs audits and solving customs problems
  • Knowledge of import and export VAT regulations including postponed VAT accounting
  • Confidence in liaising with different departments, therefore should have an excellent communication and organizational skills
  • Excellent attention to detail and ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment,
  • Collaborative working style and ability to work on own initiative,
  • Proficiency in MS Excel, Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Teams, ideally with understanding and some experience of using ERP systems
  • Valid proof of right to work in the UK
