Job Description:

If you’re a natural people-person – someone who enjoys solving problems and learning new skills – this customer-facing role will fit perfectly around your life.

We have 2 positions available: Customer Engineer and Specialist Engineer.

As our Customer Engineer and Specialist Engineer, you’ll partner with a Technical Delivery Advisor from our Manchester Mobile Centre, working in the field and virtually. Your main focus will be fault finding and fixing assets called …(click to see what we mean), mainly located in large towns, cities, stadiums, and train stations.

These hubs are modern digital screen units that reinvent the iconic public phone box for the digital age!

What makes them modern and high tech? Over 900 street hubs are located in high-footfall areas, with calling and Wi-Fi capabilities, keeping local communities connected. The digital screens display commercial content and local information, and are touch-enabled for public access.

When not fixing Street Hubs, you’ll need to think on your feet. You’ll work solo on RAN sites (boosting 4G and 5G EE network performance) and on traditional Payphone kiosks for maintenance, repair, and installations.

Job responsibilities include:

  • Installing, setting up, optimizing, and repairing Street Hub assets containing pre-configured routers and switches.
  • Repairing payphone faults, changing glass panels, and general kiosk maintenance.
  • Carrying out fixes on the RAN network, including swapping faulty boxes, cabling, health checks, alarm interrogation, and activation work, working alongside our Manchester Mobile Centre team.
  • Repairing phones across HM Prison Service sites, requiring security clearance (minimum 5 years UK residency).
  • Conducting Wi-Fi and mobile signal surveys, recommending installation locations, and installing access points.

As a Specialist Engineer, additional responsibilities include:

  • Technical tasks such as configuration setup, diagnostics, and cabling, requiring electrical qualification or willingness to complete the 18th edition C&G electrical standard.
  • Leading field site work for installations, repairs, in-life changes, and problem-solving, ensuring serviceability and safety.
  • Ensuring public and colleague safety.
  • Engaging effectively with customers, suppliers, and management, demonstrating empathy and listening skills.

Check out our Engineer page for a video showcasing a typical day for our Engineers.

Must-haves:

  • A valid manual UK driving license, with a 90-minute travel requirement.
  • Comfort working at heights (on roofs and high-rise buildings).
  • No technical experience needed for the Customer Engineer role, but customer service, problem solving, and a technical learning mindset are essential. Relevant skills and experience will be prioritized if applications are numerous.

What we offer:

Daily schedule, uniform, laptop, mobile, and a van. Training includes NRSWA, PASMA, IPAF, and support towards the 18th Edition C&G electrical standard.

For the Specialist Engineer, attendance and passing of the 18th Edition C&G electrical standards course is expected.

Role benefits include:

  • Salary of £30,458 for Customer Engineer, up to £33,331 for Specialist Engineer after qualification.
  • BT Pension scheme with minimum 5% employee contribution and up to 10% employer contribution.
  • 22 days’ annual leave plus 8 bank holidays, increasing with service.
  • Equal family leave, including 18 weeks at full pay for all parents.
  • Enhanced women’s health support, virtual GP appointments, paid carer’s leave, and more.
  • Training and career development opportunities.
  • Options to join BT Share Saving schemes and discounts on broadband, mobile, and TV packages.
