Job description

It couldn’t be easier to develop an amazing retail management career with Sainsbury’s. Our small format supermarkets are the perfect size to help you develop all the skills you’ll need — and more.

You’ll be responsible for everything that happens in-store during your shift; and great training will give you the confidence to lead your team, plan resources effectively, and ensure customers are always delighted.

What you’ll be doing

Our purpose is driven by our passion for food: together we serve and help every customer.

You’ll run the shift during the day, managing your team’s performance and time, demonstrating a decisive, organised, and inclusive approach. Reporting to the Store Manager, you and a small team of other managers will plan in advance, including shift patterns, product availability, and busy times throughout the day, ensuring that essential products are available for our customers and that everything runs smoothly. At the end of each shift, you’ll provide a thorough handover to the next manager.

We’ll give you the time and space you need to do all that properly. When our teams work well together, our customers notice.

Who you are

This role is a great way to begin your management career in retail or to develop your existing skills to a first-class level. Our customers always seek that extra special touch in-store, and your ability to guide, motivate, and inspire your colleagues will be key to achieving that.

Our structure ensures clear management presence across all opening hours, so our customers and colleagues always feel comfortable asking for help or offering solutions when needed. You’ll be ultimately responsible for making everything as good as it can be. We are an award-winning, diverse employer, committed to nurturing a team where everyone feels supported to be themselves.

How you can develop

Joining us, you will receive a clear induction and orientation, along with a tailored training plan that you will develop alongside your manager. They will support and coach you to deliver excellent performance while providing opportunities for your development.

There are many opportunities for you to stretch and enhance your skills, so just let us know when you’re ready to take on more. Remember, you’ll be part of the Sainsbury’s team, so options are always available.

What we’ll give you

Salary will depend on your experience, store size, complexity, and location. Additionally, we offer a comprehensive range of benefits for our managers, including:

  • Discount card – 10% off at Sainsbury’s, Argos, Tu, and Habitat after four weeks, increasing to 15% at Sainsbury’s every Friday and Saturday, and 15% at Argos every payday.
  • Free food and hot drinks in all our stores.
  • Generous holiday entitlement, maternity, and paternity leave.
  • Pension scheme – we’ll match 4-7.5% of your contributions.
  • Sainsbury’s share scheme – opportunity to build investment at discounted rates.
  • Wellbeing support – access to emotional support, counselling, legal, and financial advice.
  • Colleague networks – connect with like-minded colleagues to help fulfill your potential.
  • Cycle to Work scheme – hire a bike and cycling equipment, saving on tax and NI.
  • Special offers on gym memberships, restaurants, holidays, retail vouchers, and more.
