Job summary

An established industry player is seeking a Curatorial Archivist to join their Curatorial team on a fixed-term contract. This role focuses on collections management and involves working closely with curators to bridge curatorial work and collections development. We are seeking a Curatorial Archivist to join the Curatorial team on a fixed term basis until 30 November 2023.

The curatorial archivists focus on key areas of collections management while bringing core curatorial knowledge to their work. Working closely with curators and the collections management and documentation teams, the curatorial archivists serve as a crucial bridge between curatorial work and collections development and appraisal activity.

Key responsibilities include:

  • To take responsibility for selection, acquisition and disposal of material on offer to the BFI National Archive.
  • To receive and assess acquisition offers, in consultation with curators, as necessary. To document acquired materials and identify any conservation and collections management work required, in accordance with BFI policy and procedures and relevant international standards
  • To undertake identification, accessioning and documentation of materials at collection and/or item level. To participate in programme of retrospective barcoding and documentation of onsite collections against agreed targets.
  • Working within best practice guidelines, to undertake cataloguing in CID of priority titles including newly acquired films and those that are part of BFI cultural programme. To catalogue items within the archive to agreed standards using Adlib collections management software.

We are looking for candidates who have:

  • Minimum GCSE or equivalent Maths and English qualification.
  • Good general knowledge of British moving image history and familiarity with UK film and TV industries.
  • Qualification in archiving or library/information or equivalent experience
  • Excellent knowledge of cataloguing standards.
  • Excellent knowledge of the use of automated archive systems, spreadsheets and information databases for documentation and collections management, utilising established international standards.
