Role Overview:

As Kitchen Manager, you will lead a team including 1 Sous Chef and 5 Catering Assistants, providing freshly prepared meals for approximately 60 boarding students, including breakfast, lunch, supper, and snacks. The focus is on fresh, from-scratch cooking.

You will manage menu planning, food purchasing, stock control, and contribute to menu development. Responsibilities also include maintaining kitchen cleanliness, implementing policies, and ensuring health and safety standards.

Shift Pattern Overview:

  • 5 days over 7, alternating shifts between 7:00 AM–3:00 PM and 11:30 AM–7:30 PM.
  • Occasional full-day splits or full shifts may be required, with overtime paid.
  • Typical days off are Friday and Saturday or Sunday and Monday, with every third weekend off.

During outside term time, the role involves larger catering team work without split shifts. A term-time only contract can be accommodated.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage menu, food production, and purchasing within budget.
  • Ensure kitchen cleanliness and safety compliance.
  • Implement operational policies and report progress to management.
  • Lead, develop, and appraise kitchen staff.
  • Maintain health and safety standards and food safety regulations.
  • Manage stock and minimize waste.
  • Coordinate with House Master and Matron, and attend food committee meetings.

Person Specification:

  • Excellent culinary skills and experience.
  • Strong leadership and communication skills.
  • Business management experience in a kitchen environment.
  • Passion for food and excellence.
  • NVQ Level 2 in professional cookery or equivalent (desirable).
