Overview

This role sits in the Cryogenics Systems Team within the TE Magnetics (TEM) at Tokamak Energy, and is required to meet the expanding needs of TEM. We are looking for someone who can support the build and maintenance of cryogenics systems. These projects will either be test cryostats for magnets on site at TE or part of the deliverables of magnet systems for external customers.

Requirements
  • Build and maintain cryogenic systems to support the high temperature superconducting (HTS) magnet technology
  • Involvement in specification and design of required equipment
  • Contribute to the build of cryogenic systems, with a focus on the cryogenic specific aspects e.g. fitting MLI, thermal pipe insulation, making stycast joints, setting up vacuum pumps.
  • Operate and maintain cryogenic systems using both cryocooler/compressor systems and Liquid Nitrogen systems.
  • Contribute to safety reviews and risk assessments
  • Work in a mixed team of engineers, physicists, designers and technicians to develop innovative and complex devices.

Experience

  • Experience in build, maintenance or operations of cryogenic systems
  • A flexible/agile approach to daily tasks
  • Good initiative with the ability to solve problems
  • Eng Tech, IEng or working towards it, degree in Engineering or equivalent technical training.
  • Willingness to learn new skills and/or apply existing knowledge to a new field
  • High degree of self-organisation, motivation and commitment to working in defined timescales.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to work in a mixed team or engineers, physicists, designers and technicians designing innovative and complex devices.

Hazard-specific / Safety-critical duties

This job includes the following hazards or safety-critical activities which will require successful pre-employment health screening through our occupational health service before the successful candidate will be allowed to start work:

  • Working at height (ladders, scissor lifts, cherry pickers & scaffolding)
  • Work in hot or cold environments
  • Working with electricity (LV only)
  • Work with cryogenic fluids and compressed gases.
  • Working with or in the vicinity of equipment that produces high magnetic fields
  • Working with materials that are managed under the control of substances hazardous to health regulations (COSHH)
  • Occasional night working (11pm-6am) if required to support business targets
