Job description

The delivery of the Westinghouse UK Fuel Growth Program is essential to the future nuclear fuel products for all current and future reactor types and is a fundamental part of the UK Government’s Nuclear Roadmap and Net Zero 2050 commitment. The portfolio is fundamental to the Westinghouse UK Fuel long-term strategy and essential for the growth of Springfields Fuels site.

We would like to hire a Criticality Safety Advisor to provide criticality safety assessment services and support to the Springfields Site. The role reports to the Principal Assessor Criticality.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Supporting the development and modification of criticality safety cases through authoring, verifying and managing criticality Safety Case documentation, including:
  • Criticality Hazard identification, Hazard Assessments (HAZANs), deterministic and quantitative assessments, designation of proportionate safety measures and ALARP justification.
  • Conducting criticality safety assessments for both internal and external hazards.
  • Developing criticality safety strategies and/or devising key Safety Case arguments.
  • Liaison with engineering, plant operators and other specialist safety disciplines, e.g. Human Factors, Fire, Radiological/Chemotoxic, Radiological Shielding, Environmental, to present coherent and comprehensive criticality safety cases.
  • Providing direct and Intelligent Customer oversight of criticality safety assessment resource including contractors.
  • Support the Site Emergency Response.
  • Provide criticality safety training to Site Personnel.
  • Supporting appropriate national working groups e.g. Working Party on Criticality.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • You will be a skilled and experienced criticality safety assessor who has excellent report writing skills and mentoring abilities.
  • Degree in a relevant discipline or equivalent, with typically at least 5 years (SQEP 3) relevant criticality safety experience.
  • Criticality Safety Case production and management for all stages of plant lifecycle from concept design to decommissioning, hazard identification, fault analysis, Design Basis Accident (DBA) assessment, Barrier Analysis, Probabilistic Safety Assessment (PSA), development of safety functional requirements, ALARP assessment.
  • Expertise in criticality safety techniques including use of criticality modelling codes e.g. MONK, MCNP.
  • Experience in criticality accident detector placement and evacuation contour determination.
  • In depth knowledge of relevant UK regulations and standards.
  • Proven leadership skills.
  • Excellent customer service manner with strong listening and interpersonal skills.
  • Flexible in approach to support effective delivery.
  • Minimum SC Security Clearance.
