A vacancy has arisen for a Trust Grade Doctor in Critical Care at University Hospitals Dorset Trust to support the continuing expansion of the critical care service. The successful applicant will provide full shift cover (ie days/ weekends/ nights) with support from an SpR/ Staff grade anaesthetist. You will be assigned a consultant clinical supervisor and there will be opportunities for experience in theatre for those with an interest in anaesthesia. There will be opportunities for career development, audit and research which the Department will support, but this is primarily a service post. The successful candidate will also be expected to attend and deliver departmental teaching. We would expect the successful candidate to gain suitable experience in critical care medicine to allow application for a training programme. There are opportunities for teaching and simulation either to junior doctors, nursing and the multi-disciplinary critical care team.

  • Daily review of patients on critical care unit, both morning and evening and formulation of management plans with critical care team
  • Participation in daily ICU ward rounds and handover
  • Support critical care team with admission of patients and reviews of ward patients
  • Gain experience and competency with critical care procedures such as arterial line and central line insertion
  • Order investigations and prescribe therapies as instructed by critical care team
  • Communicate/handover with parent teams
  • Make referrals to other clinical specialties
  • Participate in departmental Clinical Governance meetings and mortality review meetings

There is a planned move for this service anticipated during Autumn 2025, when this role and base of work will relocate to RBH site. Upon relocation of the role/service, excess mileage allowance / reimbursement will not apply, and any travel between the postholder’s home and work base will be classified as a commute. Any other changes unrelated to this, will be handled in line with Trust/National terms and conditions.
