A well-established, reputable law firm is expanding its duty solicitor provision across South and Southeast London and is seeking a motivated, confident solicitor to lead this growing area. This role offers a unique chance to manage a demanding, high-volume caseload, work autonomously, and potentially build and lead a dedicated team within a supportive, forward-thinking legal environment.

About the Role

As the Duty Solicitor, you will be responsible for delivering professional and compliant duty solicitor services across multiple police stations and courts in South and Southeast London, including key areas such as Croydon, Wimbledon, Kingston, and Sutton. This role demands a solicitor who can manage a high-paced caseload while maintaining the highest standards of client care and regulatory compliance.

You will work closely with the firms partners and management, providing regular updates on operational performance and opportunities for service improvement. You will have the autonomy to manage your own schedule and workload, with scope to influence and improve existing processes. There is also the potential to build and lead a dedicated team of duty solicitors, helping shape the firms strategic growth in this practice area.

Key Responsibilities

  • Attend police stations and courts across South and Southeast London to provide duty solicitor services efficiently and professionally
  • Manage a busy and varied caseload with accuracy and adherence to regulatory and firm standards
  • Build and maintain effective working relationships with police officers, court officials, and internal teams
  • Take ownership of all aspects of case management, utilising the firms case management system (LEAP) and working alongside paralegals and administrators
  • Prepare and deliver detailed reports on workload, case progress, and financial performance to partners
  • Identify and implement process improvements to enhance service delivery and profitability
  • Lead and potentially grow a team of duty solicitors, fostering a culture of excellence and compliance
  • Escalate complex or high-risk matters appropriately to senior management

Candidate Profile

  • Fully qualified solicitor with demonstrable, recent experience in duty solicitor work (preferably within the last 5 years)
  • Minimum 34 years PQE with experience handling a senior-level caseload
  • Proven ability to work independently, prioritise effectively, and manage time in a fast-moving, high-pressure environment
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with a strong client-focused approach
  • Resilience and adaptability to manage the unpredictable and urgent nature of duty solicitor work
  • Commercial awareness with a genuine interest in contributing to business development and profitability
  • Comfortable working within a hybrid model and travelling to multiple locations as required

What We Offer

  • Competitive salary package commensurate with experience and skills
  • Flexible hybrid working arrangements with an office base to support collaboration and professional development
  • Opportunity to take a leadership role and shape a new strategic service area within an ambitious and expanding firm
  • Supportive, inclusive working environment with access to ongoing training and career progression pathways
  • Exposure to diverse and challenging legal work in criminal defence and duty solicitor services
  • A culture that values client care, professionalism, and innovation
