Job summary

William James Recruitment is seeking an experienced Crime Head of Department / Duty Solicitor in Greater Manchester. The role supports developing a new criminal law department with autonomy to manage own caseload alongside supervision and compliance responsibilities.

The candidate will supervise junior fee earners, ensure LAA compliance, and help shape long-term strategy while representing clients at police stations and magistrates courts. Hybrid working with client care at the forefront.

Qualifications

• 5+ years' PQE in criminal law
• Experience in legal aid criminal defence work
• Good understanding of LAA requirements and compliance
• Previous supervisory or team leadership experience
• Confident representing clients at police stations and Magistrates’ Courts

Responsibilities

• Act as a Legal Aid Supervisor ensuring compliance with LAA requirements
• Supervise, mentor and support junior fee earners
• Maintain high standards of quality, compliance and client care
• Help establish effective processes and systems for a developing crime department
• Manage a caseload of criminal matters across legally aided and privately funded work
• Support preparations for future duty solicitor rota participation
• Advise and represent clients at police stations and Magistrates’ Courts
• Contribute to the department’s longer-term strategy
• Support growth of the wider criminal practice
• Identify opportunities to improve processes and service delivery
