Job summary

William James Recruitment is seeking a Criminal Defence Solicitor for its Manchester team. The role focuses on managing varied criminal defence matters for private and publicly funded clients, with opportunities to develop advocacy skills in court and at police stations.

The successful candidate will handle case preparation, liaise with clients and courts, and support more senior lawyers in complex matters, while benefiting from a flexible, hybrid working environment in Manchester city centre.

Qualifications

• Qualified solicitor with experience in criminal law.
• Strong understanding of criminal law and court procedures.
• Excellent advocacy and client representation skills.
• Excellent communication and client care abilities.
• Strong organisational and time management skills.
• Able to manage competing priorities and meet deadlines.
• Confident using IT and case management systems.
• Proactive and collaborative approach.

Responsibilities

• Manage a varied caseload of criminal defence matters for privately and publicly funded clients.
• Attend court hearings and represent clients at police stations as required.
• Undertake advocacy in Magistrates' Court with support and development.
• Prepare legal advice, correspondence and case documentation.
• Review evidence and assist with case preparation.
• Liaise with clients, courts, counsel and other relevant parties.
• Support senior lawyers on more complex matters.
• Maintain accurate case records and meet deadlines.
