Description
The file handler assistant will predominantly assist Lead Lawyers dealing with regulatory cases, motor crime and inquest work.
Key Accountabilities
You will work as part of a team, supporting those with responsibility for progressing each file from receipt of papers from the insurer client to resolution of the case. Initially starting as a File Handler Assistant, the role will include:
- Arranges meetings, conferences, site visits, expert appointments
- Liaison with Court and Coroner's office
- Chase for transcripts and disclosure, collating the evidence
- Review of medical records, post-mortem reports and CCTV footage
- Attending site, taking photos and drafting basic statements
- Research into relevant HSE guidelines
- Research into Insured's - corporate structure, their procedures, risk assessments, documents
- Collating witness availability
- Preparation of bundles for hearings, serving bundles
- Watching briefs at hearings and inquests, drafting notes of evidence, outcome and sentencing
- Review of client’s evidence - obtaining, collating, indexing, cross-referencing with own statements and Prosecution's statements, summarising evidence for lead file handlers
- Liaising with Court, Coroner's Office and CQC/Police/HSE or relevant regulator
- Attending site inspections
- Serving Defence case statements, sentencing bundles and mitigation bundles
- Reviewing transcripts of evidence
- Organising and attending conferences & meetings, drafting note of discussion and following agreed strategy following lead lawyer’s strategy
- Attendance behind Counsel for trials & inquests - drafting notes of evidence, outcome and sentencing
Experience, Skills and Qualifications
- Prior experience in a similar role and environment - ideally you will have experience in a legal crime role or alternatively we would consider a background in a professional legal role where you can demonstrate strong transferable skills
- Ideally you will have experience in client liaison
- An ability to organise and prioritise workload using initiative
- Ability to pay attention to detail
- Ability to work with case management systems
- The personal skills to deal with insureds in a sensitive manner given the context within which they find themselves in
- Good telephone and communication skills with people at all levels inside and outside the business
- Calm under pressure with ability to re-prioritise
- Self-confidence, with good literacy and IT skills
- Good team worker with the flexibility to do what is required to get a result and ensure client service levels are met
- Ability to work effectively within the Keoghs Shared Values framework
