Job description

Credit Controller

Tunbridge Wells

Hybrid

The credit controller is responsible for managing the aged debt ledger. The role involves ensuring timely payments from customers, reducing overdue debt, monitoring accounts, contacting customers regarding overdue payments, setting up payment plans, and initiating legal proceedings when necessary. The credit controller also assesses credit risk, maintains accurate records, and contributes to financial reporting.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work closely with the Subscription Billing Controller and Financial Controller to improve credit control processes and enhance cash flow
  • Identify causes of payment delays and assess risks for high-risk customers
  • Proactively manage customer accounts and resolve outstanding debts
  • Reduce current aged debt to target levels
  • Regularly review aged receivables reports and remind customers of upcoming payments, negotiating repayment plans when appropriate
  • Perform account reconciliations and work with Customer Experience and Account Management teams to resolve issues, including issuing credit notes or re-invoicing
  • Follow up on bounced monthly statement emails and maintain accurate contact details for customer accounts
  • Request remittance advice for payments to support accurate cash allocation
  • Share confirmed payment dates with the Finance team to support cash flow forecasting
  • Provide invoices and statements to customers on request
  • Escalate non-payments by blocking accounts and initiating legal action via the Group Legal team
  • Set up new customer accounts with complete information from the Sales team
  • Assess credit risk using Credit Safe and ensure approval from the Finance Director for new credit requests
  • Enforce payment terms and ensure Direct Debit mandates are in place
  • Follow up on bounced Direct Debits to secure payment or arrange for the next collection
  • Maintain accurate records of payment terms and credit limits
  • Report on debt metrics including average debtor days and aged debt percentage
