Job summary

Freightliner is seeking a Crane Maintenance Engineer in Southampton to maintain and service rail-mounted cranes and plant equipment. This permanent role requires 12-hour shifts on a rotating two-week schedule, with day and night work and weekend rotations.

The position is safety-critical and based at Dock Gate 20, Southampton. Salary is £38,960 per annum for 35 hours, with shift premia and overtime potential (OTE £60k).

Qualifications

• Electrical apprenticeship or NVQ3 equivalent.
• AC/DC motor and drives experience required.
• PLC experience with Siemens S7 and Codesys.
• Full UK driving licence required.

Responsibilities

• Manage, maintain and carry out all designated engineering activities for Rail Mounted Gantry cranes and plant equipment, maximizing asset availability.
• Organize and carry out scheduled maintenance examinations, fault finding and repairs per maintenance procedures.
• Update and maintain records of maintenance, defects and repairs.
• Utilize Freightliner IT systems relevant to your work.
• Assist in training and development of apprentices and new recruits.
• Work flexibly within skillset and training with no job restrictions.

Crane Maintenance Engineer (internally known as Engineering Technician Grade A)

Location:

Dock Gate 20, Southampton

Salary:

£38,960 per annum (for 35 hours basic) plus shift premium and overtime. (OTE£60k)

Position Type

Permanent, full-time.

Hours of work

12‑hour shifts (6am–6pm or 6pm–6am) on a rotating two‑week schedule:

Week 1: 3 shifts

Week 2: 4 shifts

This rota includes day and night shifts, as well as weekend working.

This role is a Safety Critical position.

Key Responsibilities Include

• Manage, maintain and carryout all designated engineering activities which include Rail Mounted Gantry cranes and plant equipment. Ensuring that business requirements are met, and operational availability of assets are fully maximized.
• Organize and carry out the company’s program of engineering examinations, maintenance events, fault finding, diagnostic checking and repairs of company assess in accordance with the company’s maintenance instructions and procedures.
• Update and maintain accurate and comprehensive records of maintenance, defect and repair information.
• Fully utilize Freightliner IT systems relevant to the scope of your work.
• Participate in the training and development of new recruits and apprentices.
• Work flexibly within skillset, training and competencies with no job restrictions and give assistance with tasks as directed.
• The role is a 30/70 split, predominantly electrical.

Key Requirements

• A qualification and experience from an electrical apprenticeship or NVQ3 equivalent.
• Must have a AC/DC motor and drives experience.
• Must have PLC experience – Siemens S7, CODESYE.
• Mechanical skillset/ability would be beneficial in this role.
• Must hold full UK driving licence.
• Have an ability to work at height.
• Have a flexible approach and can-do attitude.
• Be health and safety conscious.
