Job description

The role of a bricklayer at Maintenance & Contracts involves more than just renewing bricks. We are looking for an enthusiastic, skilled individual with experience in laying bricks, screeding floors, laying vinyl floor tiles, wall tiling, and either experience with flat lay vinyl sheet flooring or willingness to learn new skills. Experience in external render repairs, concrete path repairs/renewal, manhole cover renewals, gully repairs, and guttering repairs or new rainwater downpipes would be beneficial.

Hours of work are 8am – 4.30pm Monday to Thursday, with a 1-hour lunch, and 8am – 3.30pm on Friday with a 30-minute lunch. You will be based at our main depot, Layard House, New Way, Ipswich IP2 0BX, and may work on IBC housing stock within any of the 4 Ipswich Town postcodes: IP1, IP2, IP3, or IP4. Work will be allocated via a mobile tablet, and you will be expected to complete jobs within the allotted timeframe, including emergency calls. You will accept and complete jobs, allocate materials on your handheld, and record detailed follow-up notes during job completion.

You will drive an Ipswich Borough Council fleet vehicle, which may be diesel or electric, and it will need to remain at the depot overnight. The vehicle will be stocked with imprest stock, replenished as you allocate materials for jobs. The role requires an enthusiastic person willing to learn, not limited to solely laying bricks. Candidates should be qualified to City & Guilds standards or hold relevant craft qualifications.

We seek punctual, reliable individuals who can remain calm and professional in difficult situations and communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. Patience, good listening skills, and the ability to work under pressure are essential. You must adhere to health and safety procedures and be able to work independently and as part of a team.

Hours of work are 37 per week, Monday to Friday.

We offer a competitive salary, a career grade, an average pension scheme, generous holiday and sick pay, subsidised parking, public transport discounts, free swimming and gym memberships, a cycle purchase scheme, personal and professional development opportunities, flexible and hybrid working options, an Employee Assistance Programme, and the chance to work with great colleagues.
