Job summary

Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is seeking an enthusiastic Porter (NHS AfC: Band 2) to join the Portering Services team at the Northern General Hospital. The role requires flexibility to cover all porter tasks including charge-hand and driving duties, with care for patients and the Safe transfer of patients by bed, chair or stretcher.

The post is permanent/full-time (37.5 hours per week) with shift patterns and opportunity for development within the Trust.

Qualifications

  • GCSE grade 3/D or above or equivalent qualification/experience.
  • Demonstrate commitment to personal development.
  • Customer care NVQ or equivalent qualification/experience.
  • Evidence of workplace learning.

Responsibilities

  • Transfer patients from wards/departments in beds, wheelchairs or stretchers with patient security.
  • Move patients with assistance from professional staff and support nursing teams.
  • Transfer deceased patients to Mortuary and ensure equipment is cleaned after use.
  • Remove waste from all departments and wards.
  • Assist with viewing out of hours as requested by Duty Matron.
  • Drive and check/clean vehicles as instructed and perform laundry collection/delivery.
  • Act under instruction during emergencies (cardiac arrest, fire alerts).

Job overview

We require an enthusiastic individual who can work within the Portering Services team at the Northern General Hospital and offer flexibility to cover all Portering related tasks including Charge-hand and driving duties.

Main duties of the job

The transfer of patients from all wards and departments, in beds, wheelchairs or Stretcher or via the internal Ambulance NGH ONLY making sure patient is secure to travel.

Move patients with assistance and instruction from professional staff. This includes the occasional movement of patients with valuables under the supervision of the nursing staff.

Transfer deceased patients to Mortuary, ensuring all equipment is clean after use.

Removal of waste from all depts and wards.

Assist with viewing out of hours. when requested by Duty Matron.

Driving duties plus -Check and clean vehicles as instructed.

Laundry collection / delivery.

Act under instruction from medical/nursing staff in the event of a cardiac arrest or other emergencies i.e. Fire Alert.

Qualifications
  • Educated to GCSE grade 3/D or above or equivalent qualification/ experience)
