Court of Protection Solicitor/Legal Executive | 3PQE+ | Newton Abbot | Client-Focused | Progression & Flexibility
If you’re a private client lawyer with a genuine interest in Court of Protection work and the desire to take on meaningful, complex cases, this could be your next move.
I’m working with one of the South West’s leading law firms, known for their deep community roots and expansive regional presence, looking for a Court of Protection specialist to join their Newton Abbot office. With a full-service private client offering and a growing demand in this niche area, the team is looking to expand further with someone who can confidently manage their own caseload while working closely with families, vulnerable individuals, and professionals.
This is a full-time role where you’ll handle a varied workload that includes Deputyship applications, Statutory Wills, gift applications, and the ongoing financial management of clients’ affairs under the Mental Capacity Act. You’ll liaise regularly with care teams, social workers, psychologists, and family members—playing a critical role in protecting clients from financial abuse and helping them maintain dignity and security. You’ll also be advising on property sales and purchases through the Court, benefit and care funding issues, and tax implications.
Ideally, you’ll have 3+ years' PQE (or equivalent) with clear experience in Court of Protection work. STEP or ACTAPS membership would be an advantage, but not essential. What’s more important is a clear affinity for working with vulnerable clients, excellent organisational skills, and the ability to manage a busy caseload with compassion and professionalism.
You’ll be part of a wider, supportive private client team that works collaboratively across several offices in the region. The firm encourages task-sharing to ensure efficiency and cost-effectiveness for clients, and there's a strong emphasis on personal development; including access to management training and support with progression. For the right person, there’s scope to grow your profile in the team, build external networks, and move into leadership down the line.
You’ll need access to transport, as travel to other offices or to meet clients in person will occasionally be required. In return, you’ll receive a competitive salary, flexible working options, generous holiday allowance, and an excellent benefits package focused on work-life balance and wellbeing.
