Job description

HERIOT-WATT UNIVERSITY

COURT COMMITTEE VACANCIES – 2025

Please note that interviews will be held on Wednesday 30 April 2025, Friday 2 May 2025 and Friday 9 May 2025, via Microsoft Teams.

Please note: Direct applications via LinkedIn will not be accepted on this occasion.

Heriot-Watt University is seeking new lay members for the Infrastructure Committee, the Global Student Life Committee and the Remuneration Committee. Lay members are independent of the University and join our governance committees to provide an external perspective on important issues. We welcome candidates who feel they have reached a point in their career where they can add value to a Court Committee; these roles could suit someone looking for their first non-executive board role who understands the duties of a non-executive.

The University is seeking an Infrastructure Committee member with experience of Digital and AI. The Infrastructure Committee has delegated authority from the Court via the Finance Committee. It advises the Finance Committee on matters relating to physical and digital infrastructure, including business cases for relevant strategic projects.

In addition, the University is looking for a Global Student Life Committee Member with experience of being a higher education student in Scotland or elsewhere in the world. The Global Student Life Committee has a primary purpose of ensuring excellence in the student experience at Heriot-Watt University. In particular, the Committee oversees the Student Partnership Agreement which is agreed between the Student Representative Bodies and the University. The Committee reports to the Court.

For the Remuneration Committee, the University is seeking a new member with experience within the settings of corporate governance, audit and risk, or human resources, and of shaping and commenting on remuneration and reward for CEOs and senior executives. The Remuneration Committee reviews and determines the salary and other remuneration of the most senior management staff of the University, and deals with any other relevant remuneration matters which may be referred to the Committee by the Court.

Heriot-Watt works within a strategic framework and a strong set of values, putting people at the heart of all we do. The Court is committed to promoting equality, diversity and inclusion, and wishes to increase its diversity. We welcome applications from all sectors of society, particularly from underrepresented groups (e.g. women and those who are Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic).

Membership of Court or a Court Committee is a voluntary unpaid role. These positions are therefore likely to appeal to those who wish to contribute to international higher education, widening access, the experience of our students, and the University’s financial sustainability. Lay members enjoy the benefits of contributing within a stimulating environment with like-minded but diverse individuals.

Reasonable out-of-pocket expenses will be paid in accordance with the University’s Travel and Expenses Policy.
