Job summary

Place2Be is looking for a Counsellor on Placement to provide emotional and therapeutic support to children aged 4-18 in partner schools across Birmingham. This role allows you to gain practical experience and contribute positively to children's mental health. Successful candidates will benefit from supervision and training tailored to enhance their professional development within a supportive environment.

About The Role

Please review the Placement Map below before applying, which shows all placement locations available for Midlands including the location for this vacancy. Ensure you can travel to at least one or more schools from this map. You will be asked to mention the schools in your application. Note: This does not guarantee placement spaces, but we will try to accommodate your preferences.

As a Counsellor on Placement at Place2Be, you will provide emotional and therapeutic support to children and young people aged 4-18 in partner schools. We adhere to the BACP ethical framework, and our counsellors are dedicated to improving mental health and well-being.

  • We offer regular supervision, tailored training workshops, and a recognized clinical placement.
  • Comprehensive induction and daily clinical supervision are provided.
  • You need to be available for at least one day per week to work therapeutically with up to three children, offering one-to-one counselling.
  • Placements are term-time only, lasting one academic year, with opportunities for extension.
  • You can attend up to six optional workshops per year, recognized for CPD.
  • Sessions count as clinical hours towards professional accreditation with bodies like BACP and UKCP.
  • This experience is a valuable stepping stone into a career with Place2Be; over two-thirds of our clinical staff started as Counsellors on Placement.
  • Positions are available in primary and secondary schools nationwide.

Counting your hours

All clinical hours earned on placement can contribute towards accreditation, but please check with your course tutor if child hours are accepted for your specific course. If not, you may consider applying for a second placement for experience with children.

About You

You will be a fully qualified Counsellor, Therapist, or Clinical Psychologist, or studying towards one, at the following levels:

  • Diploma in Counselling (Level 4 or above). First-year students should have completed a full academic year Certificate Course or equivalent (9-12 months).
  • Degree, MSc, or MA in Counselling, Counselling Psychology, or Psychotherapy. First-year students should have relevant experience working directly with children.
