Counselling/Clinical Psychologist - Renal Service Band 8b

Midlands Partnership University NHS Foundation Trust (MPFT) is seeking experienced Clinical/Counselling Psychologists interested in physical health to apply for this role within the Renal Services at Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust (SaTH). The position will be hosted and managed within MPFT's Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin Care Group, collaborating with a network of Psychologists and Psychological Practitioners across various specialties.

In this role, you will provide high-quality psychological care to adult patients with Chronic Kidney Disease. You will work with multidisciplinary teams at the Renal Unit at Royal Shrewsbury Hospital, Hollinswood House Telford, and satellite units. Responsibilities include delivering direct psychological interventions, collaborating with renal teams, staff training, and supervision. There are opportunities to develop innovative approaches to support patients and their families in managing their health challenges.

Clinical supervision will be provided by a Consultant Clinical Psychologist, and you will participate in regular meetings with other Psychologists and Psychological Practitioners in the region to share updates and reflect on practice.

Main duties of the job

The duties will include:

  • Supporting patients in adjusting to their diagnosis or illness progression.
  • Designing and implementing interventions for psychological difficulties related to their illness and treatment.
  • Assisting patients in making complex treatment decisions, such as renal replacement therapies.
  • Working with the team to address treatment adherence issues.
  • Supporting patients and families in decisions regarding stopping dialysis.
  • Managing challenging behaviors in dialysis patients.
  • Providing psychological consultation and facilitating reflective practice with the renal team.
  • Providing teaching and training as needed.
