Council Tax Officer

Location: Hybrid - Newham (office attendance required Tuesdays and Fridays)

Contract: Temporary Assignment

Hours: Full-time

We are seeking an experienced Council Tax Officer to join the Council Tax and Benefits Service in Newham. This role is solely Council Tax focused and does not involve Benefits administration.

The successful candidate will be responsible for carrying out all tasks associated with the administration, determination of liability, collection, and enforcement of current and historical Council Tax revenue.

Responsibilities
  • Deliver efficient administration of Council Tax, ensuring correct liability, billing, collection, and recovery.

  • Respond to and resolve customer enquiries in a professional and customer-focused manner.

  • Undertake casework in accordance with legislation, regulations, and council policy.

  • Work flexibly across service points and remotely, supporting colleagues to ensure service improvements.

  • Maintain constructive relationships with residents, colleagues, elected members, and external partners.

  • Support service delivery to meet deadlines and targets.

  • Promote a positive image of the council at all times.

  • Undertake home visits where required and attend occasional evenings/weekend commitments to meet service needs.

Requirements
  • Proven experience in Council Tax administration (please note: this is not a Benefits role).

  • Strong working knowledge of NEC Revs & Bens and NECDM systems.

  • Ability to interpret and apply Council Tax legislation and procedures.

  • Excellent communication and customer service skills.

  • Flexible approach, with the ability to work as part of a team and independently.

  • Willingness to attend the office every Tuesday and Friday (hybrid working arrangement).
