Job summary

CRA Consulting is seeking an experienced Costs Lawyer to join its Court of Protection and Personal Injury team. The role supports preparation, submission and recovery of legal costs, operating within a flexible remote/hybrid structure from Sheffield, South Yorkshire.

Role: Costs Lawyer - Remote
Location: Sheffield, South Yorkshire (remote, hybrid)
Salary: £30,000 - £40,000
Contract: Full time, permanent, remote/hybrid

We are recruiting for an experienced Costs Lawyer to join an established Court of Protection and Personal Injury team.
Working as part of the wider Costs and Billing function, you will provide a specialist costs service in relation to bills of costs, working closely with the relevant court costs office and other stakeholders while ensuring that the interests of clients remain at the centre of your work.
This is an opportunity to join a collaborative specialist legal team and play an important role in supporting effective costs recovery and financial management across a varied caseload.

About the Role

The successful candidate will be responsible for supporting the effective preparation, submission and recovery of legal costs.
Key responsibilities will include:

  • Preparing, submitting and managing bills of costs through the relevant court costs assessment process, including service on third parties where required;
  • Monitoring important dates, deadlines and procedural requirements to ensure compliance;
  • Working closely with internal teams and external professionals, including costs specialists, counsel and court costs personnel;
  • Reviewing costs assessments and responding to challenges, negotiations and appeals;
  • Providing guidance on costs recovery procedures and best practice;
  • Supporting the team in achieving effective and commercially appropriate costs recovery;
  • Maintaining accurate billing records, spreadsheets and time-recording information;
  • Ensuring financial and case information is kept accurate and up to date;
  • Keeping informed of developments in costs law, assessment procedures and relevant guidance; and
  • Participating in training and ongoing professional development.

Essential Experience

The successful candidate will have:

  • At least two years' experience working as a Costs Lawyer or Law Costs Draftsperson;
  • Experience of working within a Court of Protection environment; and
  • A practical understanding of the costs assessment and recovery process.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel and other spreadsheet-based systems; and
  • Familiarity with specialist costs software would be advantageous.

Previous experience of working towards financial, billing or performance targets would also be desirable.
