Energy Voice (a DC Thomson brand) is expanding its editorial team with a role for a talented and self-starting Correspondent.

Energy Voice provides frontline energy news and views to over 2 million energy industry professionals each year. For over 25 years it has been the eyes and ears of the North Sea energy community. Energy Voice is now the first word for the entire UK energy spectrum, ensuring our readers are in the know and equipped to succeed.

With energy at the heart of the national conversation—raising questions on future resource, jobs and economics amid climate change and geopolitical crises—this position will provide a talented journalist with the opportunity to break exclusives and deliver key analysis in multiple formats.

Our news platforms, podcasts and events have never been more crucial in helping leaders understand the key factors influencing the future of UK energy.

ABOUT THE ROLE

We are seeking a self-starting Correspondent with a nose for a story and experience producing original, high-quality journalism for online and/or print—ideally within energy, business or related industry sectors. A keen interest in the energy transition, regional economies and infrastructure is a must.

You will be responsible for producing breaking news and progressive, insightful, audience-led content to serve and grow our subscriber base, joining a growing editorial team spanning the UK.

The role requires the successful candidate to be based in or near one of the following regions: the North West (Liverpool/Manchester), North East, Yorkshire and the Humber, or Teesside. A strong local network plus a deep understanding of the patch, its communities and industries, and the stories that matter to them is essential.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Write news and opinion pieces for online and print publications(editing experience desirable)
  • Generate original stories and feature articles
  • Work with the editorial team to ensure best-in-class reporting
  • Stay ahead of industry developments to ensure Energy Voice is the essential source of breaking news
  • Generate original ideas for articles and AV content
  • Join and contribute to our award-winning podcast (Energy Voice Out Loud)
  • Conduct interviews with industry leaders and build network
  • Push content and personal profile on social channels such as LinkedIn
  • Represent the brand at internal and external events
  • Report from energy sector events and deliver video interviews
  • Liaise with editorial teams across other DC Thomson publications and brands
  • Position may require occasional moderating of Energy Voice and E-FWD events and production of commercial content
CANDIDATE REQUIREMENTS:
  • Degree in journalism or demonstrable and relevant experience
  • Industry contacts and familiarity with the UK energy sector (essential)
  • Preferred knowledge of renewable energy, hydrogen and carbon abatement industries
  • A journalist with experience and/or able to demonstrate finding their own stories and optimising content for digital
  • Has an interest and knowledge of the local beat, the issues that affect it and the industries that support it
  • Has the willingness to embrace new skills and tools in the digital arena such as SEO, social media, video, audio and more, while maintaining a mindset of continuous learning and growth
  • Has the ability to work in a team, collaborating on ideas and sharing responsibility for meeting readership targets
  • Has excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Knowledgeable on the Editors’ Code of Practice, GDPR and media law
  • Has a full driving licence

This is a full-time, permanent position, working 35 hours per week. While you will be primarily working in the field as a local correspondent, you will be assigned a DC Thomson office location nearest to your patch to serve as your base. This is not a home-working role as such, as regular on-the-ground reporting and in-person newsgathering are central to this position.
