Main Purpose of Job

A Correctional Maintenance Officer Supervisor is the supervisory level of maintenance work in a correctional facility which involves the security, custody and supervision of adult inmates who perform maintenance work. Employees in this classification supervise lower-level Correctional Maintenance Officers.

POSITION DUTIES

• Supervises subordinate Maintenance Supervisors and Maintenance Officers involved in training and directing inmates in repair, renovation, and preventive maintenance tasks in assigned trades and areas of the facility. Responsibilities include hiring, disciplining staff, assigning work, monitoring progress, and evaluating performance.
• Monitors inmate workers to assess training and job performance, ensuring compliance with custody and security protocols.
• Manages implementation of maintenance programs, develops preventive maintenance schedules, reviews work orders, approves costs, and inspects ongoing and completed work.
• Prepares specifications for contractual projects, inspects and approves work-in-progress and completed projects.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: High school diploma or equivalent acceptable to the Maryland State Board of Education.

Experience: Three years of experience in custody, security, and supervision of adult inmate workers in maintenance operations.

Notes:

• Educational requirement set by Maryland Correctional Training Commission.
• Military experience in correctional fields may substitute for experience at a rate of two years per one year of experience required.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Experience developing preventive maintenance schedules.
• Experience reviewing and approving cost estimates for supplies and materials.

LIMITATIONS ON SELECTION

This position is for current Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services employees only.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

• Valid Maryland driver’s license required; some positions may require a 1st Grade Stationary Engineer license.
• Completion of the Maryland Correctional Training Commission's Entrance Level Correctional Training Course during probation.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

• Citizenship, age, background check, interview, and physical exam are required for correctional officer certification.
• Annual physical recertification for physical capabilities is mandatory.
• Subject to 24/7 call-in and substance abuse testing.
