Job summary

Nottingham City Council is hiring two Coroner's Service Support Officers to assist the Coroner's Service with inquests and administrative duties at The Council House, Nottingham. The role involves acting as a court usher, supporting bereaved families, jurors and partner agencies, and using the necessary technology to ensure smooth inquest proceedings.

The successful candidate will handle calls and emails, maintain confidentiality, and communicate professionally in a formal court setting.

Responsibilities

  • Act as court usher for HM Coroner inquests and support bereaved families, jurors, witnesses and partner agencies.
  • Manage incoming phone calls and emails and perform admin duties to ensure consistent service delivery.
  • Be trained on relevant technology for smooth running of inquests and support HM Coroner.

Job description

Contract Type: Permanent

Working Hours: 9am - 5pm (10am - 6pm approx one week in every four)

Worker Type: On-site worker

Salary: Starting Salary is £27,709 (Level one) rising to £28,608 (Level three) per annum (pro-rata for part-time)

Location: The Council House, Nottingham NG1 2DT

About the Role

We are hiring two new Coroner's Service Support Officers to support the running of the Coroner's Service. As a CSSO you will regularly act as court usher for HM Coroner inquests where you will play a key part in supporting HM Coroner, bereaved families, jurors witnesses and partner agencies, helping to ensure that inquests are managed professionally, efficiently and with compassion. You shall be trained to be familiar with all the relevant technology required for the smooth running of the inquest. You will be at the heart of a faced paced service and be responsible for managing incoming phone calls and emails, alongside other administrative duties that ensure consistent service delivery and positive outcomes for the bereaved of Nottingham and Nottinghamshire.

About You
The ideal candidate will have:
  • Appreciation and understanding of the sensitive and high-profile nature of HM Coroners Service, the ability to work with distressing and sensitive information and maintain confidentiality at all times.
  • Ability to represent the service professionally with customers and stakeholders in writing, on the telephone and in person whilst working in a formal court setting and provide advice accurately.
  • Ability to remain calm and professional in a courtroom environment and to troubleshoot any issues that arise whilst supporting HM Coroner.
  • Demonstrate good attention to detail and ability to record information accurately onto different systems.

This post is covered by the statutory duty under Part 7 of the Immigration Act (2016) (English Language Requirement for public sector workers) and therefore the ability to speak fluent English, is an essential requirement for the role
