Hours: This is full-time role (37 hours per week)

British Transport Police (BTP) is the national police force for the rail network throughout Great Britain. We are the ‘Guardians of the Railway,’ putting passenger safety at the heart of what we do. Our values are simply: We Care, We Do the Right Thing, We Strive to Be Better Every Day, We Are One BTP, and We Are Proud to Protect. Join us and help create an environment where we can all be our best every day.

The Opportunity:

British Transport Police have an opportunity for a Researcher to join the Coordinated Research and Evaluation (CoRE) Unit. As a CoRE Researcher with BTP, you will provide high‑quality research and intelligence development to support effective decision‑making across the Force.

The role involves researching, assessing and evaluating information from a wide range of sources to produce intelligence products at strategic, tactical and operational levels. You will also manage all intelligence report evaluations for the Force—assessing, inputting, developing and disseminating intelligence in line with relevant legislation.

Additionally, you will handle all research requests from internal and external customers, including live‑time and urgent enquiries requiring immediate action.

What you'll be doing:

  • Evaluating and managing intelligence reports – assessing, sanitising and validating all incoming intelligence, creating accurate records and ensuring compliance with MOPI, NIM and relevant legislation.

  • Researching and developing intelligence – conducting qualitative and quantitative research, identifying intelligence gaps and emerging issues, and supporting the production of intelligence and analytical products.

  • Disseminating intelligence and supporting operations – sharing intelligence with BTP teams and external partners, including providing live‑time intelligence to support critical, tactical and operational decision‑making.

  • Providing specialist support and collaboration – working with specialist teams, conducting overt and covert open‑source enquiries (as an III practitioner), preparing research outputs and evidence, and maintaining strong partnership relationships to support information sharing.

What you'll bring to the team:

  • Strong research and analytical skills – able to undertake both qualitative and quantitative research, assimilate large volumes of data and produce clear, detailed and accurate research‑based reports.

  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills – able to communicate findings clearly, listen to others, and build productive working relationships with colleagues, partners and stakeholders.

  • Excellent organisational and IT capability – proficient in using IT systems, databases and software, with the ability to prioritise workload, plan effectively and meet deadlines.

  • Relevant knowledge and qualifications – educated to degree level (or equivalent experience) with a sound understanding of key legislation and guidance relevant to the role (e.g. RIPA, GDPR, MOPI, IPP) and the ability to interpret and apply guidance appropriately.

Additional Information:

The post holder will be required to attend training courses, which may be away from home location.

Further information about this vacancy can be found in the attached job description.
