Job description

GiveDirectly (GD) aims to reshape international giving – and millions of lives – by providing cash grants directly to the world’s poorest. The Brookings Institution estimates that $70B of cash transfers would be required to eliminate the poverty gap; the aid sector currently spends $135B each year, much of it on evidence-free interventions. GiveDirectly wants to change that, establishing cash transfers as a benchmark for foreign aid – as the index fund is a benchmark for the financial industry – and in the process accelerating the end of extreme poverty.

GD has raised over $1B since launching in 2011, delivered cash to more than 1.5 million people in 15 different countries. We’ve also supported large-scale, experimental research that indicates strong recipient impact of our programs. As a result, GD has been celebrated as one of the most innovative non-profit companies by Fast Company , while the growing cash transfer movement (and GD’s leading role within it) have been featured in the New York Times Magazine , This American Life , Foreign Affairs , and The Economist .

Our culture is candid, analytical, agile, and non-hierarchical. Our global team of ~150, and country operations teams of ~650, together come from 21 different countries speaking 69 different languages. From software engineers to seasoned humanitarian workers, former management consultants to public servants, researchers to field operations -- it’s an incredible group of people.

Our values are central and deliberately opinionated. We genuinely center the people we serve in our decision making, and strive to build an ambitious, dynamic and high performing environment. We strongly encourage you to read through our values carefully, if they reflect how you like to work and energize you, this could be a great fit.

We work hard to create an environment in which all our team members can thrive, succeed and grow. We support flexibility, take care of each other, have fun, and create professional growth opportunities.

Priority Application deadline: August 18, 2025

Location: This role is fully remote but must overlap with an East Africa timezone by at least 3 hours. We are unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of employment Visas in the U.S. or U.K. at this time. We have a strong preference for candidates based in one of our Africa countries of operation (Kenya, DRC, Malawi, Mozambique, Uganda, Rwanda, Liberia).

About this role

GiveDirectly is hiring three exceptional Coordinators to join our growing People Team — two focused on Recruitment and one on People Operations. If you’re passionate about building world-class employee experiences and want to be part of a mission-driven organization that cares for its people, this is the role for you.

As a Coordinator, you’ll play a critical role in enabling our People function to scale its impact. Whether you're supporting the end-to-end hiring process, or ensuring smooth and consistent People Operations for our global team, your work will directly contribute to making GiveDirectly an outstanding place to work.

While we’re not necessarily looking for candidates with concrete experience in People Operations or Recruitment, we are looking for detail-oriented problem-solvers who love to create structure, move quickly, and take pride in delivering high-quality work. You’ll thrive in this role if you’re energized by operational excellence, love collaborating across teams, and bring a strong sense of ownership to your work.

Reporting lines:

  • The People Operations Coordinator will report to the Senior Manager, People Operations
  • The Recruitment Coordinators will report to the Recruitment Manager

Travel Requirement: Must be able to travel ~1-2 times per year to one of our countries of operation for team retreats or field visits

The People Operations Coordinator will:

  • Issue contracts : Maintain up to date contracts for all global staff in line with local labor laws, updating in line with employment changes such as promotions, role changes, and relocations
  • Pay the team : Run payroll for all global staff, including annual bonuses
  • Field and quickly close support tickets : Respond to all inbound inquiries, requests, and complaints via the People Team Ticketing System, meeting SLAs
  • Maintain & optimize HRIS as a source of truth for team member data : Ensure all employee data is up to date, including location, team, level, job title, reporting lines, compensation, and time off
  • Facilitate seamless global mobility : Ensure standardized processes for international assignments, relocations, and cross-border role transitions to ensure compliance, efficiency, and a positive employee experience

The Recruitment Coordinator will:

  • Find top talent : Proactively source, attract, and engage a diverse, high-quality candidate pipeline, internally and externally, and convince them to join the team
  • Review CVs, conduct interviews, and coordinate schedules : Serve as the face of the organization as candidates' first point of contact, providing a seamless and supportive hiring experience
  • Operationalize a streamlined, first-class talent acquisition process : Build and continuously improve the talent acquisition process, including providing high quality support and communications to both candidates and hiring teams
  • Field and quickly close support tickets : Respond to all inbound inquiries, requests, and complaints via the People Team Ticketing System regarding recruitment requests, meeting SLAs
  • Contribute to recruiting initiatives focused on equity, process improvement, and team enablement

You'll be a top candidate for this role if you bring:

  • Exceptional alignment with GiveDirectly Values and active demonstration of our core competencies: emotional intelligence, problem solving, project management, follow-through, and fostering inclusivity. We welcome and strongly encourage applications from candidates who have personal or professional experience in the low-income and/or historically marginalized communities that we serve. We have a strong preference for candidates based in our countries of operation.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple processes and stakeholders simultaneously
  • Clear communication — both written and verbal — with internal teams and external stakeholders (e.g. candidates)
  • Comfort navigating ambiguity and adjusting to rapidly changing priorities
  • Customer service orientation and extremely high follow-through
  • Strong attention to detail and a systems-oriented mindset
  • Discretion in handling sensitive and confidential employee information
  • A process improvement mindset and a willingness to suggest and test new approaches

Why are you being asked to complete this form?

We are a federal contractor or subcontractor. The law requires us to provide equal employment opportunity to qualified people with disabilities. We have a goal of having at least 7% of our workers as people with disabilities. The law says we must measure our progress towards this goal. Completing this form is voluntary, and we hope that you will choose to do so. Your answer is confidential. No one who makes hiring decisions will see it. Your decision to complete the form and your answer will not harm you in any way.
