Salary: £13.26 per hour

Hours: 25 hours per week, Mon-Fri 09:00-14:00

DBS: All school based roles are subject to an enhanced DBS check, in line with “Keeping Children Safe in Education 2023”. DBS results will be considered and risk assessed in partnership with the relevant school safeguarding lead.

At Totally Local Company, an opportunity has arisen for a Cook in Charge who possesses a professional demeanour, sound judgement, and integrity to join our Catering team based at Lane End School.

Main Purpose of the Job
  • Prepare and cook meals for children within agreed food and labour budgetary costs.
  • Ensure compliance with food specification nutritional standards and relevant processes and procedures.
  • Adhere to all health and safety and food safety guidelines.
  • Complete administrative procedures and paperwork to required standards.
  • Supervise and organise catering staff, order stock, plan, prepare, cook, and serve food as directed.
  • Manage receipt, temperature probing/recording, and storage of all delivered goods.
  • Control stock rotation.
  • Direct and supervise general catering assistants.
  • Implement cleaning regimes and record on schedules to comply with HACCP policy.
  • Induct all staff, including agency staff, on equipment use, kitchen techniques, health and safety, food safety, COSHH, manual handling, and nutritional standards, following ‘Task Talk’ system, including refresher training.
  • Plan menus for theme days and promotional activities with the area manager / food champions.
  • Complete and process documentation.
  • Liaise with head teachers, school personnel, client, contractors, suppliers, pupils, and parents.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • NVQ Level 2 in professional cookery or equivalent is essential.
  • Supervise and coordinate kitchen staff.
  • Prepare, cook, and serve meals, including special diets.
  • Ensure health and safety standards are followed.
  • Manage clerical duties related to food, equipment, training, cleaning, and documentation.
  • Train new staff on equipment, techniques, and safety.
  • Manage receipt and storage of deliveries.
  • Control stock and manage catering for special functions.
  • Assist with meal serving and maintain menu standards.
  • Report equipment issues and ensure cleanliness and safety of kitchen and dining areas.
  • Prepare dining area for meals.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Liaise regularly with school and company personnel, contractors, suppliers, pupils, and parents.
  • Meet standards for QAP, ISO 9001 2008, Environmental 14001:2004, and Investors in People.
  • Promote the business positively and act as an ambassador.
