Join Our Team as a Cook at Edinburgh Central Youth Hostel

Locations: Edinburgh Central Youth Hostel, 9 Haddington Place, Leith Walk, Edinburgh EH7 4AL

Contract: Permanent

Accommodation: This is a live-out position

About Us

Hostelling Scotland is a non-profit charity focused on people and communities. We provide opportunities for those who might not otherwise experience Scotland, through our youth programmes, and aim to be ambassadors for Scotland, making a difference in the lives of our guests and communities.

The Role of Cook

As a Cook, your key responsibilities will include:

  1. Preparing daily breakfast buffets and evening meals for groups ranging from 10 to 120 guests, ensuring high quality and adherence to dietary requirements including allergens and special diets.
  2. Managing stock levels by familiarising yourself with ordering systems and suppliers, and monitoring stock controls.
  3. Communicating effectively with team members to ensure smooth shift handovers and compliance with policies and procedures.
  4. Maintaining cleanliness and hygiene standards in accordance with HACCP and hostel policies.
  5. Ensuring compliance with Cooksafe procedures and providing food hygiene and catering training to team members.
  6. Handling guest feedback and complaints professionally and promptly, in collaboration with management.
Ideal Candidate

We are looking for someone with:

  1. Experience catering for large groups, ideally with pastry skills and in busy contract catering environments.
  2. Knowledge of food hygiene, HACCP, and COSHH regulations, with relevant qualifications such as Elementary Food Hygiene certificate or SVQ/NVQ in catering.
  3. The ability to multitask and work calmly under pressure.
  4. A broad knowledge of food styles.
