Job summary

Brookes HC Recruitment is recruiting an experienced Cook for a specialist 22-bed nursing care service in Abingdon. You will oversee the day-to-day running of the kitchen and ensure residents receive varied meals that reflect their individual preferences, nutritional needs and dietary requirements.

Qualifications

• Proven experience as Cook/Chef in a care or residential setting.
• Catering qualification at QCF Level 3 or equivalent.
• Valid Food Hygiene certificate and knowledge of food safety.
• Experience supervising kitchen staff and managing shifts.
• Strong understanding of nutrition and dietary requirements.
• Excellent communication and organisational skills; team player.
• Legal right to work in the United Kingdom.

Responsibilities

• Plan and prepare varied menus and nutritiously balanced meals.
• Produce fresh, well-presented dishes meeting dietary needs.
• Supervise kitchen staff and allocate duties across shifts.
• Maintain hygiene, health and safety standards in all areas.
• Organise daily/weekly kitchen cleaning and stock checks.
• Keep records, risk assessments and required documentation up to date.
• Monitor budgets and minimise waste while maintaining quality.

Hours: 40 hours per week

Shifts: Daytime hours with alternate weekend working

Responsibilities

• Planning and preparing varied menus
• Producing fresh, nutritious and well-presented meals
• Preparing meals for residents with special dietary requirements
• Ensuring food is prepared and served to a consistently high standard
• Organising daily, weekly and periodic kitchen cleaning schedules
• Maintaining appropriate stock controls and kitchen inventories
• Ensuring food preparation areas meet hygiene, health and safety standards
• Completing kitchen records, risk assessments and required documentation
• Monitoring quality standards across all aspects of food preparation
• Working within agreed budgets and reducing unnecessary waste
• Allocating duties and providing guidance to other kitchen staff
• Attending staff and resident meetings when required
• Maintaining confidentiality and treating residents with dignity and respect

Requirements

• Previous experience working as a Cook or Chef
• A catering qualification at QCF Level 3 or an equivalent qualification
• A valid Food Hygiene certificate
• Previous supervisory or kitchen-management experience
• Knowledge of food safety and health and safety requirements
• An understanding of nutrition and special dietary requirements
• Strong communication and organisational skills
• Ability to work effectively as part of a wider care team
• Availability to work alternate weekends
• Right to work in the UK
• Experience within a residential, nursing or care-home kitchen would be advantageous.
