Job summary

Automation Experts seeks a Controls Systems Engineer to own industrial automation across high-performance cells and lines on site in Gloucestershire. The role focuses on uptime, safety, and continuous improvement, with hands-on engineering supporting production, maintenance, and engineering teams.

The engineer will design, program, and commission PLCs, develop safety systems, and deliver SCADA/HMI solutions. Commutable from Bristol, Gloucester, Ross-on-Wye, and surrounding areas.

Qualifications

• Proven experience as a Controls/Automation Engineer.
• Hands-on with PLC programming and commissioning.
• Experience with SCADA/HMI and control system architecture.

Responsibilities

• Design, program, and commission PLCs and motion systems.
• Develop and integrate functional safety components.
• Deliver SCADA/HMI solutions with alarms, diagnostics, and data capture.
• Lead automation projects from concept to handover.
• Troubleshoot faults and support production and maintenance teams.

Controls Systems Engineer - The Role:

• Design, program, and commission PLCs & motion systems (Siemens TIA/Step7, Mitsubishi, Beckhoff)
• Develop and integrate functional safety systems (light curtains, scanners, safety PLCs)
• Deliver SCADA/HMI solutions with alarms, diagnostics, and data acquisition
• Lead automation projects from concept to handover
• Troubleshoot faults, implement upgrades, and support production & maintenance teams

Controls Systems Engineer - The Person:

• Proven experience as a Control Systems Engineer or in a similar automation engineering role.
• Strong proficiency in PLC programming (Siemens, Allen-Bradley, or equivalent platforms).
• Hands-on experience with industrial automation systems, including SCADA, HMI, and overall control system architecture.
• Solid background in manufacturing, engineering, or industrial environments.
• Located in Gloucestershire, this role would be commutable from Bristol, Gloucester, Ross-on-Wye, Newport and surrounding areas.
