Job description

Job Title: Controls Projects Engineer

You will like

Managing technical controls projects from our HQ near Poole, Dorset, within a specialist controls & instrumentation firm renowned for process safety solutions. This includes design, manufacturing of controls, engineering services, and systems integration for key clients in oil & gas, renewable energy, and utilities. The role involves working within a small team of engineers, contract support staff, and administration in a friendly office environment located between Poole & Bournemouth, Dorset, with occasional meetings and support at customer sites during pre- and post-commissioning phases.

The position manages PLC-based system design and consultancy projects (approximately GBP10K to GBP200K), from sales through design, manufacturing, to site commissioning. Strong communication skills, both technical and commercial, are essential as the role is customer-facing. Responsibilities include reading and interpreting technical documents such as industry standards, client specifications, P&IDs, and logic diagrams.

More specifically, you will:

  • Ensure compliance with standards, specifications, and guidelines related to Instrumentation and Control, in line with industry legislation, standards, and guidance.
  • Prioritize operations support and own projects to ensure timely delivery within budget.
  • Manage project work including planning, budgets, schedules, change control, estimating, documentation, and progress reporting.
  • Review client specifications and standards to ensure project compliance.
  • Develop functional requirements for control systems, SIS, F&G, and instrumentation.
  • Develop application software for PLC, HMI, and SCADA systems.
  • Participate in design reviews, including HAZOP/LOPA, hazardous area assessments, etc.
  • Interface with client engineering representatives.
  • Participate in site commissioning tasks.

You will have

To succeed as a Controls Projects Engineer, you should have:

  • HNC/HND/Degree in a relevant engineering discipline or equivalent engineering experience.
  • TUV Functional Safety certification is preferred but not essential; development pathways are available.
  • At least 5 years of experience in PLC configuration and application software development (e.g., ABB AC500-S / 800xA HI, Emerson DeltaV SIS, Triconex, HIMA F60 / HiQuad X, Siemens S7-Failsafe, Allen Bradley ControlLogix / GuardLogix).
  • Experience in HMI/SCADA configuration (e.g., Siemens WinCC / PCS7 / Emerson DeltaV).
  • Knowledge of industrial communication protocols (Profinet, Profibus, Modbus TCP & RTU, OPC).
  • Ability to conduct site surveys and verify existing control systems and instrumentation.
  • Experience in planning and delivering technical projects.
  • A current UK driving license.
