Job Description

Position Title: Controls Engineer

Location: Gilberdyke, East Yorkshire, UK

JOB DESCRIPTION:

We have an exciting opportunity to join our Engineering Team as a Controls Engineer. In this role, you will support the business by providing expert technical support to engineering and operations, with a focus on machine drive & control system technologies. You will develop and implement continuous improvement programs to enhance manufacturing safety, quality, productivity, and efficiency. Your responsibilities include troubleshooting to root cause, coaching and developing the engineering team, and working within a continuous improvement environment. This position is based at our site in Gilberdyke, East Yorkshire, UK, reporting to the site Engineering Manager.

Responsibilities

Key tasks include:

  • Diagnosing complex machine faults and control system errors promptly to minimize downtime, and applying permanent corrective measures.
  • Developing and implementing projects to improve manufacturing availability, product quality, safety, and process efficiency.
  • Maintaining knowledge of manufacturing processes and operating sequences of the CAT 1 manufacturing processes.
  • Coaching and developing maintenance engineering team members on machine control and automation systems.
  • Updating electrical system documentation following changes.
  • Investigating plant failures (FMEA) and preparing reports.
  • Providing second-level support to shift teams during reactive maintenance.
  • Conducting obsolescence reviews and creating risk mitigation plans.

Unique aspects of this role

  • Experience working in a fast-paced manufacturing environment with diverse equipment.
  • Proficiency in PLC fault finding, diagnostics, and programming with Siemens S5/71, Telemecanique PL7, Allen Bradley, Omron.
  • Experience programming 6-axis robotic handling equipment.
  • Knowledge of machine safety control systems per BS EN ISO 13849-1.
  • Designing and modifying electrical control circuits in compliance with legislative standards.
  • Understanding inverter and servo drive systems, including parameterization and tuning.
  • HNC in Electrical Engineering or equivalent, BS7671 17th Edition. C&G 2391 or equivalent training is advantageous.

  • Qualified engineer with a recognized apprenticeship or equivalent, committed to continuous professional development.
  • Proven experience in a similar role within a manufacturing setting.
  • Leadership, organizational, and decision-making skills.
  • Strong fault-finding, problem-solving, and system design abilities.
  • Willingness to learn new technologies and share knowledge.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
