Job summary

Canadian Solar SSES (UK) Ltd. is seeking a Controls Engineer in the UK to lead BESS control implementations and ensure reliable grid support.

You will review contracts, validate design packages, develop automation tools, and troubleshoot industrial networks. The role requires 3+ years in industrial controls, experience with Modbus/DNP3/TCP/IP, and willingness to travel up to 15%.

Qualifications

  • Experience with industrial control systems in electrical generation or renewables.
  • Familiarity with inverter-based resources and grid applications.
  • Strong knowledge of Modbus, DNP3, and TCP/IP networks.
  • Experience with SCADA or plant control systems.

Responsibilities

  • Review contracts and vendor agreements for controls requirements.
  • Validate design packages, electrical drawings, and data flows.
  • Maintain documentation in SharePoint and coordinate with vendors.
  • Develop batch scripts and automation tools to collect data.
  • Serve as a technical resource for customers, EPCs, utilities, and project teams.
  • Troubleshoot network issues in VPN-secured environments.
  • Support site commissioning and provide controls expertise.
  • Ensure compliance with standards, safety, and company policies.

This candidate must be familiar with power systems, utility generation, protection, and transmission systems, as well as modern industrial networks and utility communication protocols.What You'll Be Doing as a Controls EngineerReview project contracts and vendor agreements for controls-related requirements and ensure alignment throughout project execution.Review and validate project design packages, including electrical drawings, data flow diagrams, network designs, signal mappings (analog, Modbus, DNP3), electrical power models, and control narratives.Maintain and organize technical documentation within SharePoint while coordinating documentation flow with vendors and project stakeholders.Develop batch scripts and automation tools to streamline data collection and improve operational efficiency.Serve as a key technical resource for customers, EPCs, utilities, equipment vendors, and internal project teams throughout project execution.Troubleshoot network and communications issues within VPN-secured environments.Respond to customer and operator requests regarding system modifications, troubleshooting, and control system enhancements.Support site commissioning activities and provide technical expertise for all controls-related tasks.Ensure all activities are performed in compliance with engineering standards, project requirements, safety protocols, and company policies.What You'll Bring to The PositionEducational background in Controls Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related discipline.Minimum of 3 years of experience working with industrial control systems within electrical generation, renewable energy, or similar power system environments is required.Experience working with inverter-based resources (IBR) such as Battery Energy Storage Systems, solar, or other renewable generation technologiesExposure to substations, protective relays, and transformers is preferred.Demonstrated experience with industrial communication protocols including Modbus, DNP3, and TCP/IP.Strong understanding of industrial networking, including IP addressing, subnetting, switches, firewalls, VPNs, and network communications.Experience with SCADA systems, plant control systems, or utility-scale automation.Excellent communication and problem-solving skills with the ability to collaborate across multidisciplinary teams.Ability to travel up to 10–15% nationally and internationally to support project sites and vendor facilities.Compensation & Benefits:Canadian Solar offers a competitive salary plus fully comprehensive benefits and performance bonus package based on an annual objective achievement.
