Job Summary

Black & Veatch is seeking a Controls and Instrumentation Design Engineer to lead in the technical design of substation and BESS Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems.

You’ll take a leading role on a variety of SCADA engineering and design activities in support of various power projects, including substation modernization and BESS integration. The role can be based in our Glasgow or London office 3 days per week with flexibility to work from home 2 days.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Collaborate with the project team to generate engineering design documents and deliverables (drawings, points lists, configuration files, etc.) for systems and components related to the substation and BESS SCADA systems.
  2. Oversight of lower-level engineering work or assignments.
  3. Conceptual and detailed design of SCADA hardware, networking equipment, fibre networks, datalinks, Human Machine Interface (HMI) screens, and points lists.
  4. Support with quality assurance checking, specification writing, standards development, factory acceptance testing, cyber security auditing, and commissioning support at sites or remotely.
Minimum Qualifications
  1. Previous controls system design experience for power projects.
  2. Bachelor’s degree in Engineering.
  3. Significant relevant work experience with proven ability to work independently and guide others.
Preferred Qualifications
  1. Minimum of 5 years relevant Substation and BESS experience.
  2. Experience in developing control system network architecture diagrams, datalink points lists, control narratives, control logic diagrams, reading one-line diagrams, and procurement specifications for SCADA equipment.
  3. Experience with IEC 61850, DNP3, Modbus, OPC, and other control system protocols.
  4. Experience with VMware or other virtual environments.
  5. Experience with protective relays, substation and BESS automation systems.
  6. Experience with HMI screen development.
  7. Experience with UK NIS cyber security standards.
  8. Network troubleshooting skills and experience with network analysis tools such as Wireshark.
  9. Excellent writing, presentation, and verbal communication skills.
  10. Registration as a Professional Engineer.
