Job summary

Caterpillar is seeking an engineer in Wimborne Minster to design advanced electrical control systems and integrate electrical and mechanical subsystems. The role involves developing software and procedures to optimise electro-mechanical performance in collaboration with scientists, and prototyping mechatronic devices with motors, sensors, and gears.

The candidate will also identify weaknesses in finished products and contribute to continuous improvement within a global engineering team.

Qualifications

  • Degree in an accredited Engineering, Computer Science, or Materials Science curriculum.
  • Knowledge of embedded systems and their applications.
  • Ability to diagnose and troubleshoot technical issues on hardware, software, or operation.
  • Experience with product testing and design improvements.

Responsibilities

  • Separates fundamental concepts from supporting details in explaining a product or service.

Embedded Systems :

Knowledge of embedded systems and their applications; ability to develop embedded systems with varying levels of complexity to control the operations of the machine it is embedded within. Level Basic Understanding:

  • Cites examples of embedded systems used in daily operation.
  • Explains the major characteristics and components of embedded systems.
  • Highlights the several applications of embedded systems.
  • Lists out the advantages and disadvantages associated with embedded systems.
Technical Troubleshooting :

Knowledge of technical troubleshooting approaches, tools and techniques; ability to anticipate, recognize, and resolve technical issues on hardware, software, application or operation. Level Basic Understanding:

  • Describes problem identification, reporting and escalation procedures.
  • Explains the underlying concept of using a systematic approach to solve technical problems.
  • Identifies available resources and support systems for troubleshooting.
  • Describes common hardware, software and communication problems; finds ways to resolve issues.
Product Testing :

Knowledge of product testing approaches, techniques and tools; ability to design, plan and execute testing strategies and tactics to ensure product quality at all stages of manufacturing. Level Basic Understanding:

Caterpillar Marine Power UK Ltd is located on the outskirts of Wimborne on the Ferndown and Uddens Business Improvement District. Positioned centrally along the south coast, it is located close to national and international transport links. With approximately 130 members of staff, there is a long and distinguished history spanning over 50 years of manufacturing marine propulsion and auxiliary engines under the Cat® and Perkins Marine® brands. Genset packages ranging from 1.5 Litre to 7.1 Litre and 7.1 Litre propulsion engines are produced at the Wimborne site. The facility employs a wealth of hugely experienced designers, engineers and technicians used to providing solutions for commercial, pleasure, and military customers. From the design, testing and building, each engine is proven before leaving the premises to ensure the best performance for the end-user.
