Job summary

Caterpillar Marine Power UK Ltd is seeking a Control Systems Engineer to design and integrate advanced electrical control systems for marine propulsion and auxiliary engines. The role emphasizes embedded systems, mechatronics, and software procedures to optimize performance.

Responsibilities include prototyping, testing, and addressing product weaknesses, with a strong focus on analytical thinking and collaboration across engineering teams. Onsite work is required.

Qualifications

  • Degree in an accredited Engineering, Computer Science, or Materials Science curriculum.
  • Strong background in designing electrical control systems and mechatronic devices.
  • Experience with embedded systems and product testing.
  • Ability to analyze problems and develop robust solutions.
  • Willingness to work onsite five days a week.

Job Title: Control Systems Engineer

Salary: £41,500 to £51,000 (depending on skills and experience)

Location: Wimborne

About Us

Caterpillar Marine Power UK Ltd is located on the outskirts of Wimborne on the Ferndown and Uddens Business Improvement District. Positioned centrally along the south coast, it is located close to national and international transport links. With approximately 130 members of staff, there is a long and distinguished history spanning over 50 years of manufacturing marine propulsion and auxiliary engines under the Cat® and Perkins Marine® brands. Genset packages ranging from 1.5 Litre to 7.1 Litre and 7.1 Litre propulsion engines are produced at the Wimborne site. The facility employs a wealth of hugely experienced designers, engineers and technicians used to providing solutions for commercial, pleasure, and military customers. From the design, testing and building, each engine is proven before leaving the premises to ensure the best performance for the end-user.

Role Definition

Designs, develops, and enhances electro-mechanical systems and mechatronic devices to optimize products and systems.

Responsibilities:
  • Designing advanced electrical control systems and integrating electrical and mechanical systems.
  • Designing and implementing software and procedures to control and enhance electro-mechanical systems and mechatronic devices performance in collaboration with scientists.
  • Designing and prototyping mechatronic devices with motors, solenoids, gears, sensors, and springs.
  • Identify and address areas of product weakness in finished products.
  • Requires a degree in an accredited Engineering, Computer Science, or Materials Science curriculum.

Embedded Systems:

Knowledge of embedded systems and their applications; ability to develop embedded systems with varying levels of complexity to control the operations of the machine it is embedded within.

  • Explains the major characteristics and components of embedded systems.
  • Highlights the several applications of embedded systems.
  • Lists out the advantages and disadvantages associated with embedded systems.
Technical Troubleshooting:

  • Describes problem identification, reporting and escalation procedures.
