What you’ll do:

The Contract Engineering Manager (CEM) is responsible for leading the engineering delivery of projects involving civil engineering disciplines, including Drainage, Geotechnical, Fencing, Foundations, Piling, Embankment Stabilisation, Site Investigation, and Environmental Sustainability. The CEM will serve as the primary technical authority, ensuring that all solutions meet contractual, regulatory, and technical standards. A key responsibility of the role is driving the adoption of sustainable engineering techniques that deliver low-carbon and environmentally responsible solutions. The CEM will also act as the Temporary Works Coordinator and support the Designated Individual (DI) for the business and contribute to tendering activities, promoting sustainable engineering practices across all disciplines.

What you’ll do:

Key Responsibilities:

Engineering Leadership

  • Provide technical leadership on civil engineering projects, focusing on Drainage, Geotechnical, Fencing, Foundations, Piling, Embankment Stabilisation, Site Investigation, and Environmental Sustainability.
  • Integrate sustainable engineering solutions across the project lifecycle, with a particular emphasis on low-carbon technologies, energy-efficient methods, and resource minimisation.
  • Liaise with clients, subcontractors, and stakeholders to ensure engineering objectives are aligned with technical requirements, sustainability goals, and regulatory standards.
  • Mentor and guide the engineering team to ensure the delivery of high-quality, sustainable engineering solutions.
  • Sustainable Engineering Solutions
  • Champion the integration of sustainable engineering practices, ensuring the use of low-carbon materials, environmentally responsible techniques, and energy-efficient methods.
  • Promote circular economy principles, waste minimisation, and environmental protection across all aspects of design and delivery.
  • Conduct sustainability impact assessments for engineering solutions, including those for Foundations, Piling, Embankment Stabilisation, and Site Investigation, to identify opportunities for carbon reduction and resource efficiency.
  • Drive the inclusion of sustainability considerations in tender submissions and project delivery methodologies.
  • Tendering & Pre-Construction Support
  • Collaborate with the bid team to develop competitive, sustainable, and technically sound solutions for tenders across Drainage, Geotechnical, Fencing, Foundations, Piling, Embankment Stabilisation, and Site Investigation projects.
  • Contribute to the preparation of technical sections of tenders, including method statements, risk assessments, preliminary designs, and sustainability strategies.
  • Identify risks during the bidding process and propose engineering solutions that support project objectives and sustainability targets.
  • Engage with clients and stakeholders to clarify technical and sustainability requirements, ensuring the organisation’s engineering capabilities are well communicated.
  • Design Management
  • Lead the delivery of designs for permanent and temporary works, ensuring sustainability is embedded in all stages of the design process.
  • Oversee designs for Drainage, Geotechnical, Fencing, Foundations, Piling, Embankment Stabilisation, and Site Investigation, ensuring compliance with all relevant engineering standards and environmental regulations.
  • Approve designs and collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams to ensure that technical, sustainability, and regulatory requirements are met.
  • Temporary Works Coordinator
  • Act as the business’s Temporary Works Coordinator, responsible for ensuring that temporary works are designed and managed to meet safety, quality, and sustainability requirements.
  • Approve temporary works designs and ensure compliance with industry standards, particularly BS 5975.
  • Maintain accurate records of temporary works designs, risk assessments, and compliance checks.
  • Train and guide project teams on temporary works processes, with a focus on sustainable and resource-efficient methods.
  • Technical Assurance
  • Ensure robust technical assurance processes are in place for project delivery, with an emphasis on sustainability and quality control.
  • Lead design reviews, risk assessments, and constructability assessments to identify opportunities for environmental and sustainability improvements.
  • Ensure all engineering documentation, including method statements, is comprehensive, accurate, and aligned with sustainable practices.
  • Project Delivery
  • Work closely with Contract Managers and Construction Managers to ensure engineering deliverables are integrated into project schedules, budgets, and resource plans.
  • Ensure that engineering solutions are delivered on time, within budget, and with a focus on sustainability and environmental protection.
  • Address technical challenges in Drainage, Geotechnical, Fencing, Foundations, Piling, Embankment Stabilisation, and Site Investigation, proposing practical solutions that meet project objectives.
  • Compliance & Safety
  • Ensure all engineering activities comply with safety, environmental, and regulatory standards.
  • Support the development of safety documentation, such as Construction Phase Plans (CPPs) and Temporary Works Risk Assessments, that reflect sustainable construction practices.
  • Promote a strong safety and environmental culture across all teams, ensuring a commitment to compliance and continuous improvement.
  • Stakeholder Engagement
  • Represent the organisation in technical discussions with clients, regulatory bodies, and third parties, advocating for sustainable engineering practices.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders to promote the company’s capabilities in delivering sustainable, low-carbon engineering solutions.
  • Engage with local communities and stakeholders to identify opportunities for community benefit and environmental stewardship.
  • Reporting & Documentation
  • Prepare and present engineering reports, sustainability metrics, and technical documentation, ensuring all stakeholders are informed of project progress.
  • Track and report on project sustainability outcomes, including carbon reductions, material reuse, and other environmental impacts.
  • Maintain detailed records of design approvals, engineering changes, and compliance documentation to support audit requirements.

What we’re looking for:

Essential:

  • Degree in Civil Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Chartered or Incorporated Engineer status (or working towards).
  • Demonstrable experience in civil engineering, particularly in Drainage, Geotechnical, Fencing, Foundations, Piling, Embankment Stabilisation, and Site Investigation.
  • Extensive knowledge of BS 5975 and temporary works management.
  • Proven ability to manage multi-disciplinary design and delivery teams.
  • Experience supporting tendering processes, including preparing technical submissions and identifying engineering solutions.
  • Demonstrated commitment to implementing sustainable and environmentally responsible engineering practices.
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills.
  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities.

Desirable:

  • Experience in the construction, infrastructure, or geotechnical sectors.
  • Familiarity with engineering software such as AutoCAD or other design tools.
  • Knowledge of Health, Safety, Quality, and Environmental (HSQE) management systems.
