Job summary

Grafton Banks Finance Limited in central London is recruiting an Assistant Accountant on an initial 6-month contract to support the business during a busy period and ensure the smooth running of transactional finance functions. Reporting to the Finance Director, you will handle bank reconciliations, purchase and sales ledgers, VAT returns, and month-end journals within a small, supportive team.

Qualifications

• AAT qualification or Part Qualification (ACCA/ACA/CIMA) preferred.
• Experience running a transactional finance function largely unsupervised.
• Strong double-entry bookkeeping and month-end close knowledge.
• Hands-on VAT knowledge and quarterly VAT returns experience.
• Solid Excel skills (lookups, pivots) and ERP familiarity.

Responsibilities

• Process bank transactions and perform regular bank reconciliations.
• Manage purchase ledger: PO creation, supplier invoices, coding, and payment runs.
• Process employee expenses and credit card transactions with VAT coding.
• Maintain supplier ledger and resolve queries.
• Raise and issue sales invoices with milestone-based billing and attach supporting docs.
• Monitor timesheet postings for correct project billing.
• Support credit control in collections when needed.
• Prepare and post month-end journals including prepayments and accruals.
• Prepare balance sheet reconciliations and investigate unreconciled items.
• Review costs monthly to identify material variances and document findings.
• Maintain fixed asset register and post depreciation.
• Prepare quarterly VAT returns and maintain VAT audit trails.
