Job description

The Online Tests and Assessments (OTA) service provides psychometric tests for recruitment across the Civil Service. In 2021-22, over 1 million online tests were completed on the OTA service for roles across the Civil Service. The use of tests has grown year-on-year, expanding the range of tests offered. The next phase is to replace and expand the current digital service to include tests and assessments beyond recruitment, such as for learning and development.

As a Content Designer in OTA, you will help create test content, including questions, user flows, and guidance to enable users to take tests. This role touches on learning, skills measurement, and occupational psychology.

Team: The service is a multidisciplinary team, including digital specialists, Occupational Psychologists, and Psychometricians.

Our digital team comprises a Product Manager, Delivery Manager, User Researcher, Business Analyst, and Content Designer (this role). The team is supported by a wider community of practice.

The psychology team includes occupational psychologists, psychometricians, and administrative support.

We are seeking a Content/UX Designer to join Government Business Services (GBS) within the Cabinet Office to develop our Online Tests and Assessments offering within the wider recruitment service.

We follow the DDAT job description model for Content Designer and Interaction Designer roles.

Content designers make services easier to understand and use by creating accessible, user-friendly content.

We seek individuals passionate about words and structuring information and guidance. The ideal candidate should understand how clear, simple content benefits users at every step and be able to advocate for good content backed by user feedback and testing.

Responsibilities

  • User-centred content design: Support designing content that meets user needs and simplifies complex language and processes, ensuring accessibility for all users, including those with assistive technologies.
  • UX Design: Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team in an agile environment to develop user-centred designs, analyze current interactions, and identify improvements, applying interaction design best practices.
  • Evidence-based practice: Use analytics, user feedback, research, and usability testing to inform and justify design decisions.
  • User focus: Understand diverse user needs through evidence, translate user stories into content, and propose suitable design approaches.
  • Agile working: Possess good knowledge of Agile methodology and apply an agile mindset in delivery.
  • Content/design concepts and prototyping: Choose effective content options for different audiences and demonstrate proposed content improvements.
  • Stakeholder relationship management: Communicate clearly and regularly with stakeholders at all levels, tailoring communication, building relationships, and aligning user needs with stakeholder expectations.
