Job description

The Online Tests and Assessments (OTA) service provides psychometric tests for recruitment across the Civil Service. In 2021-22, over 1 million online tests were completed on the OTA service for roles across the Civil Service. The use of tests has grown consistently year-on-year, expanding the range of tests offered. The next phase involves replacing and expanding the current digital service to support tests and assessments beyond recruitment, such as for learning and development.

As a Content Designer in OTA, you will assist with test content creation, including questions, items, user flows, and user guidance to facilitate test-taking. This role offers an exciting opportunity to work at the intersection of learning, skills measurement, and occupational psychology.

Team: The service is a multidisciplinary team comprising digital specialists, Occupational Psychologists, and Psychometricians.

Our digital team includes a Product Manager, Delivery Manager, User Researcher, Business Analyst, and Content Designer (this role). The team is supported by a broader community of practice for each role.

The psychology team includes occupational psychologists, psychometricians, and administrative support staff.

We are seeking a Content/UX Designer to join Government Business Services (GBS) within the Cabinet Office to develop our Online Tests and Assessments offerings within the broader recruitment service.

We follow the DDAT job description model for Content and Interaction Designers.

Content designers aim to make information accessible and easy to understand, ensuring the service is user-friendly for all.

We value individuals passionate about words and structuring information. The ideal candidate should understand how clear, simple content enhances user experience at every step. You should advocate for quality content within your product team and stakeholders, supporting your decisions with evidence from user feedback and testing.

Responsibilities

  • User-centred content design: Support content design to meet user needs, simplifying complex language and processes. Be aware of government accessibility standards and design content compatible with assistive technologies.
  • UX Design: Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team in an agile environment to convert concepts into user-centred designs. Understand current interaction designs and identify opportunities for improvement. Apply interaction design best practices to enhance user experience.
  • Evidence-based practice: Use various data sources—analytics, user feedback, research, usability testing—to inform and justify design decisions.
  • User focus: Recognize the diverse needs of users accessing content and services, translating user stories into appropriate content and design solutions based on evidence.
  • Agile working: Possess a good understanding of Agile methodologies and apply an agile mindset in delivery.
  • Content/design concepts and prototyping: Select optimal options to make content understandable for different audiences and demonstrate proposed content improvements.
  • Stakeholder relationship management: Communicate clearly and regularly with stakeholders at various levels, tailoring messages to their needs, building relationships, and ensuring user needs are met.
  • Strategic thinking: Contribute to content strategies and policies, and assist in creating content standards or patterns.
