Job description

The Online Tests and Assessments (OTA) service provides psychometric tests for recruitment across the Civil Service. In 2021-22, over 1 million online tests were completed on the OTA service for roles across the Civil Service. The use of tests has grown year-on-year, expanding the range of tests offered. The next phase is to replace and expand the current digital service to include tests and assessments beyond recruitment, such as for learning and development.

As a Content Designer in OTA, you will help create test content, including questions, user flows, and guidance to enable users to take tests. This role touches on learning, skills measurement, and occupational psychology.

Team: The service is a multidisciplinary team including digital specialists, Occupational Psychologists, and Psychometricians. Our digital team comprises Product Managers, Delivery Managers, User Researchers, Business Analysts, and Content Designers. The psychology team includes occupational psychologists, psychometricians, and administrative support.

We are seeking a Content / UX Designer to join Government Business Services (GBS) within the Cabinet Office to develop our Online Tests and Assessments within the wider recruitment service.

We follow the DDAT job description model for Content and Interaction Designers.

Content designers make information understandable and accessible, ensuring the service is easy for everyone to use. We seek individuals passionate about words and structuring information, who understand how clear content supports users at every step. You should advocate the value of good content and support decisions with evidence from user feedback and testing.

Responsibilities

  • User-centred content design: Support designing content to meet user needs, simplifying complex language and processes, and ensuring accessibility for assistive technologies.
  • UX Design: Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team in an agile environment to turn concepts into user-centered designs. Understand current interaction design and identify improvements. Apply interaction design practices to enhance user experience.
  • Evidence-based practice: Use analytics, user feedback, research, and usability testing to inform and justify design decisions.
  • User focus: Recognize diverse user needs, translate user stories into content, and propose suitable design approaches.
  • Agile working: Demonstrate good knowledge of Agile methodology and apply an agile mindset to delivery.
  • Content/design concepts and prototyping: Select the best options for making content understandable and demonstrate proposed content improvements.
  • Stakeholder relationship management: Communicate effectively with stakeholders at various levels, tailor communication, and build relationships while meeting user needs.
  • Strategic thinking: Contribute to content strategies and policies, and help develop content patterns or standards.
