Job Overview

Applications are invited for the post of Consultant in Trauma and Orthopaedics based at North Manchester General Hospital (with special interest in knee surgery and fracture neck of femur surgery) but with the requirement to work flexibly across all MFT orthopaedics sites. The post holder will be part of a dynamic and innovative team of surgeons. Prospective candidates must be fellowship trained to deliver this service.

The successful candidate should be fellowship trained and have completed CCST along with full GMC registration and a license to practice in the UK is required.

Candidates must be eligible for their own GMC registration: an active license, ceased license or pending application with the GMC at the point of application. Candidates who do not fit this criteria will not progress through to the shortlisting stage.

Main Duties of the Job

The successful candidate will, above all, be a productive and cohesive member of the Trauma team.

1. The successful candidate will be expected to organise their own workload.
2. Continuing responsibility for the care of patients in his/her charge, including all administrative duties associated with patient care.
3. Contributing to undergraduate, post-graduate and continuing medical and multi-professional education activity including teaching as necessary.
4. Participation in clinical audit and research.
5. Conducting appropriate duties in cases of emergencies and unforeseen circumstances.
6. Multidisciplinary teamwork is envisaged as a key component of the working of this Trust and will involve Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) discussion with other colleagues.
7. Development of special interests that fit in with the Directorate needs and the strategic direction of the Trust.
8. Undertaking ward rounds as appropriate.
9. Providing evidence-based care for patients in a multidisciplinary setting.

Person Specification

Clinical

• Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for gaining CCT in T&O.
• Post-CCT fellowship experience in Knee and Hip Surgery (or within 6 months of entitlement).

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

• Expertise and wide experience in the sub-specialty.
• Good understanding of Clinical Governance.
• Evidence of audit work and where this has brought about change.
• Evidence of participation in research.
• To be formally recognized as Clinical Supervisor as defined by the GMC Trainer Standards.
• Research Skills: Publication of research articles, demonstrating understanding of research methodology and commitments.
• Evidence of relevant peer-reviewed papers and other publications (e.g., book chapter, book editor, case report – not abstracts or letters).
• To be formally recognized as Educational Supervisor as defined by the GMC Trainer Standards.

Management and Administrative Experience

• Ability to advise on efficient and smooth running of specialist service.
• Ability to organise and manage outpatient priorities, surgical waiting lists, and operating lists.
• Ability to manage and lead a surgical firm.

Teamwork and Communication

• Proven ability to build and maintain effective teams.
• Evidence of development and management of change.
• All applicants to have demonstrable skills in written and spoken English that are adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues.
