Responsibilities

• Providing expert clinical care in Trauma & Orthopaedics, including assessment, diagnosis, and surgical management of complex primary & revision lower limb arthroplasty procedures.
• Contributing to the delivery and development of a high-quality arthroplasty service aligned to Health Board objectives and regional transformation programmes.
• Sharing responsibility for the acute management of trauma patients, including participation in a 1 in 12 on-call rota, ensuring safe, timely and consultant-led decision making for emergency admissions.
• Leading multidisciplinary collaboration with specialist nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and orthogeriatric teams to optimise patient outcomes, especially for frail and elderly patients.
• Supporting the development of integrated care pathways across hospital and community settings to improve continuity of care and patient experience.
• Contributing to governance, quality improvement and audit activities to meet high safety, effectiveness and patient-centred care standards.
• Teaching, training and supervision of junior medical staff and the wider multidisciplinary team, and driving service development and innovation within arthroplasty and trauma services.

Job description

Help shape the future of lower limb arthroplasty services in South West Wales as a Consultant in Trauma & Orthopaedics with a specialist interest in complex primary and revision surgery. The successful candidate will join a supportive department delivering both elective and emergency care across Hywel Dda University Health Board. This role offers the opportunity to contribute to the continued development of our arthroplasty service, with a focus on delivering high-quality outcomes, patient safety and evidence-based care. We are looking for a clinician with advanced surgical expertise in lower limb arthroplasty and experience in managing complex and high-risk cases, including revision surgery. You will play a key role in service development, work closely with multidisciplinary colleagues, and contribute to training, quality improvement and governance activities. Based at Glangwili General Hospital, the post provides opportunities to help shape specialist arthroplasty pathways in line with Health Board and regional priorities, supporting the delivery of high-quality care for patients across South West Wales.

• Providing expert clinical care in Trauma & Orthopaedics, including the assessment, diagnosis, and surgical management of patients requiring complex primary & revision lower limb arthroplasty procedures.
• Contributing to the delivery and ongoing development of a high-quality, sustainable arthroplasty service aligned to Health Board objectives and regional orthopaedic transformation programmes.Sharing responsibility for the acute management of trauma patients, including participation in a 1 in 12 on-call rota, ensuring safe, timely and consultant-led decision making for emergency admissions.
• Leading and supporting multidisciplinary working across orthopaedics, including close collaboration with specialist nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and orthogeriatric teams to optimise patient outcomes, particularly for frail and elderly patients.
• Supporting the development of integrated care pathways across hospital and community settings, ensuring continuity of care & improved patient experience.
• Contributing to clinical governance, quality improvement and audit activities, ensuring practice meets the highest standards of safety, effectiveness and patient-centred care.
• Playing an active role in teaching, training and supervision of junior medical staff and the wider multidisciplinary team.
• Demonstrating leadership in service development, including identifying opportunities for innovation, efficiency, and improved clinical outcomes within arthroplasty & trauma services.
