Applications are invited for the post of a full-time Consultant to join the Department of Stroke Medicine at our Trust. If successful, you will be joining an enthusiastic and experienced stroke specialist multidisciplinary team.
Our Stroke Service admits approximately 600 patients with confirmed stroke each year. An out of hours thrombolysis service is provided in partnership with Nottingham University Hospitals (NUH). In addition, there will be some responsibility to provide cover to the acute geriatric wards at weekends.
Depending on the skills of the successful candidate, an opportunity exists to take part in the acute medical on-call.
A high-risk TIA service runs 5 days per week with dedicated same-day carotid Doppler and MRI imaging to provide carotid endarterectomy within 48 hours as needed. At weekends, the service is provided by NUH.
Our inpatient services are based at Kings Mill Hospital, offering superb facilities for both stroke inpatients and outpatient services.
An integrated unit on Ward 53 and 54 is the hub for hyper-acute, acute, and rehabilitation stroke services. Four monitored beds comprise the hyper-acute bay, and the senior stroke nurses covering are all NIHSS certified and available 24/7 to admit patients directly from A&E as well as assessing potential thrombolysis patients. The remaining 25 beds on the stroke ward are for ongoing acute management of our stroke patients and ongoing rehabilitation, which includes a therapy treatment area.
There is a dedicated Early Supportive Discharge (ESD) Service that provides intensive rehabilitation within the community. This is supported by physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech and language therapy, clinical physiology, and nurse and rehabilitation support workers. On average, 40% of the patients admitted to the stroke unit are discharged to the ESD.

Full and Specialist Registration and a license to practice with the GMC is essential. Those trained in the UK should have evidence of higher specialist training leading to CCT or be within 6 months of confirmed entry from the date of interview or eligibility for specialist registration (CESR). The ability to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary team is also essential.
