Job summary

University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust in Stoke-on-Trent seeks a Consultant in Stroke Medicine to lead and coordinate care across hyper-acute, acute and rehabilitation phases. Job overview

This exciting opportunity will involve working at the University Hospital of North Midlands (UHNM) covering all areas of stroke care, including hyper-acute stroke care, post stroke care and stroke rehabilitation. UHNM is a tertiary referral centre offering a 24/7 thrombectomy service.

Main duties of the job

The successful applicants will be expected to provide expert patient assessment in the diagnosis and management of patients in both in-patient and out-patient settings. They will be required to actively engage in and develop stroke services and to provide clinical leadership to others. They will work collaboratively with colleagues to provide new ways of working across different professions, organisations i.e. community/primary care.

University Hospitals of North Midlands has two sites: Royal Stoke University Hospital, located in Stoke-on-Trent, and County Hospital, located in Stafford. From these hospitals we provide a full range of general acute hospital services for people living in and around Staffordshire and beyond. Our specialised services include cancer diagnosis and treatment, cardiothoracic surgery, neurosurgery, renal and dialysis services, neonatal intensive care and paediatric intensive care. Qualifications

• Full GMC Registration
• MRCP (or equivalent)
• Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for stroke unit care.
• Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for gaining entry on the General Medical Council (GMC) Specialist Register via one of the following: a. Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) (the proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of the interview) b. Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR) application submitted, with evidence provided, and at an advanced stage with outcome expected within a reasonable timeframe (typically within 3 to 6 months), including where delays are due to GMC processes c. European Community Rights
• CCT in Stroke Medicine
• MD, PhD

Clinical Experience & Training

• Sub-speciality training in Stroke medicine
• Experience in assessing patients for thrombolysis/thrombectomy in Hyper Acute Ischaemic Stroke
• Ability to take full and independent responsibility for the care of patients
• Ability to offer expert clinical opinion in a range of problems within specialty
• Good writing and presentation skills
• Ability to organise and prioritise workload effectively.
• Ability to plan strategically and to exercise sound judgements when faced with conflicting pressures
• Willingness to develop an area of special interest to fit in with current establishment and service needs
