Job description
Overview

This is a full-time Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist (or Specialist) position in the Bournemouth and Christchurch area, Dorset. The post is based in the coastal university town in southeast Dorset. The post holder will work 10 PA within the Bournemouth and Christchurch core CAMHS team alongside a substantive Consultant and a multidisciplinary team to provide comprehensive community-based services to young people up to age 18 registered with GP practices in the area.

It is essential that you maintain Section 12(2) approval and be an Approved Clinician. The role includes direct clinical contacts and service delivery, and you may be asked to participate in the On-call rota unless an exemption is made after discussion with the Medical Director/Deputy Medical Director.

For Consultant applicants, a recruitment and retention payment of £20,000 is offered (paid in monthly instalments for the first year). A relocation package of up to £10,000 is available if moving to Dorset.

Main duties can include Medical Leadership and Medical Education roles (1 or 2 PA non-clinical) if interested. You will work as part of an outreach-focused multidisciplinary mental health team and collaborate with colleagues from Social Services, Education, and other Trusts to deliver joint care.

Qualifications and Requirements

Essential

  • General medical qualification (e.g., MBBS) with Licence to Practise.
  • MRCPsych or recognised equivalent (e.g., membership of a psychiatry college in another country).
  • Section 12(2) approval and Approved Clinician approval or ability to obtain before starting.
  • CCT in Psychiatry or Specialist Register in Psychiatry (within 6 months) or on Specialist Register in Psychiatry.

Desirable

  • Qualification or higher degree in medical education, clinical research, or management.
  • Additional clinical qualification.
  • Experience of medicine outside psychiatry (e.g., general practice, medicine).
  • For Specialist post: at least 2 years of working experience in Community CAMHS at specialist doctor level.

Clinical Skills, Knowledge & Experience (Essential)

  • Excellent knowledge in psychiatry; effective multidisciplinary team involvement.
  • Strong bio-psycho-social approach and broad medical knowledge.
  • Ability to meet duties under MHA and MCA; evidence-based decision-making with team input.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • For Specialist post: minimum twelve years of clinical experience post-qualification and four years of postgraduate training, including psychiatry specialty training or equivalent.
