Job summary

This role involves developing fire safety strategies and understanding both British and international fire safety standards. Qualifications

  • Degree recognized by a professional engineering body required.
  • Chartered Engineer status or progressing towards it preferred.
  • Understanding of British fire safety standards essential.

Responsibilities

  • Develop Fire Safety Strategy reports.
  • Conduct Means of Escape analysis, including evacuation times and routes.
  • Assess understanding of British fire safety legislation.

The Senior Fire Engineer will work predominantly within the building sector, although opportunities to support other sectors may arise from time to time, considering the multidisciplinary nature of Arcadis as well as the range of services Arcadis delivers to its clients.

  • Development of Fire Safety Strategy reports
  • Means of Escape analysis (including calculations of evacuation times; escape routes and exits widths; assessment of travel distances; development and assessment of evacuation strategy plans)
  • Assessment and understanding of the main British fire safety legislation and standards applied to buildings, such as Approved Document B (AD B), BS standards
  • Assessment and understanding of the main British fire safety legislation and standards, such as the London Underground fire safety standards, Network Rail standards, e.g., LUL S, Railway Safety Principles and Guidance (RSPG)
  • Risk-based interpretation and application of these fire safety documents as well as other codes of practice such as international documents like NFPA standards (e.g., NFPA 101, NFPA 5000)

Qualifications & Experience:

  • A suitable engineering (e.g., Fire Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Aerospace Engineering), architecture, scientific, or other numerate degree (e.g., Physics, Chemistry, Maths) from a recognized university.
  • Qualifications should be recognized by a professional engineering body.
  • Ideally a Chartered Engineer or working towards Chartership.
  • Understanding of ALARP (As Low As Reasonably Practicable) principles.
  • Fire Risk Assessment principles.
  • Understanding of fire dynamics, heat transfer, and smoke behavior principles in enclosed environments (particularly in undergrounds and tunnels).
  • Basic understanding of Active Fire Protection (AFP) and Passive Fire Protection (PFP) systems.
  • Basic knowledge of fire modeling simulation (using zone models such as CFAST and CFD-based models such as FDS).
